Late bucket sinks Tigers

OBERLIN, Ohio -- Oberlin's Emmanuel Lewis scored a layup with 11 seconds left on Saturday and that was enough to send the Yeomen to a 62-60 North Coast Athletic Conference victory over 23rd-ranked DePauw.

The Tigers dropped to 14-5 overall and 9-3 in the NCAC, while Oberlin improved to 6-13 overall and 3-9 in conference play.

Michael Wilkison's jumper with 2:43 left gave DePauw a 60-58 lead before Randie Ollie tied the game for the eighth time on a layup with 1:32 remaining.

A DePauw turnover gave Oberlin the ball back and the Yeomen called timeout with 38 seconds left. After the ball was knocked out of bounds with four seconds on the shot clock, the hosts used their final timeout and then got the ball to Lewis for the eventual game winner.

A DePauw pass sailed out of bounds with three seconds left, but following a DePauw timeout, Oberlin couldn't inbound the ball cleanly and the Tigers gained control and called timeout with .5 seconds left. Lewis picked off the inbounds pass and sealed the win for Oberlin which was the third over DePauw in the last five meetings.

The Tigers jumped out to an early 9-2 lead before Oberlin battled back to lead by one on a couple of occasions. Pat Haggin hit a three and scored on a layup before Adam Botts nailed a jumper to cap a 7-0 DePauw run over the final 1:39 of the first half and give the Tigers a 31-25 halftime lead.

DePauw stretched the lead to as many as eight points early in the second half before the Yeomen went on a 12-1 run and set the stage for a back-and-forth contest over the final 13 minutes.

Wilkison led four DePauw double-figure scorers with 14 points, while Haggin added 13, Tommy Fernitz 12 and Botts 10. Fernitz paced the Tigers with eight rebounds and two blocks, while Botts handed out four assists.

Geoff Simpson and Ollie each scored 13 for Oberlin with Jesse Neugarten and Jack Poyle adding 10 apiece. Ollie paced the Yeomen with six rebounds as Oberlin held a 31-24 edge on the boards.

The Yeomen's 12 offensive rebounds helped them to a 14-6 second-chance point advantage. Lewis had three assists and three steals in the win.

Each team was 24-of-50 from the field with DePauw hitting 7-of-20 three-pointers to Oberlin's 6-of-12. The Yeomen outscored the Tigers from the line, 8-5.
