Putnam County swimmers advance to Saturday sectional competition

PLAINFIELD -- While larger schools are likely to fight it out for the Plainfield swimming sectional title on Saturday, a number of local athletes should represent Putnam County well with strong swims.

The Greencastle High School 200 medley relay team of Mallary Meyer, Emily Wheeler, Amelia Smith and Corrie Romer kicked Thursday night's preliminaries off right, qualifying for the top seed in the race with a time of 1:56.30.

The relay is one of six finals swims for the Lady Tiger Sharks on Saturday, including Smith in the 50 freestyle, Meyer in the 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke, Wheeler in the 100 breaststroke, as well as the 200 freestyle relay team of Smith, Erin Mace, Rosio Gomez and Romer and 400 freestyle relay team of Gomez, Cecilia Pohlar, Libby Brush and Wheeler.

South Putnam has two relays in the finals, with Katie Beasley, Katie McHugh, Megan Arnold and Katie Hansel representing the Eagles in both the 200 medley and 200 freestyle relays.

Greencastle also has a number of consolation finalists, including Wheeler (200 IM,) Brush (200 IM and 500 freestyle), Romer (50 and 100 freestyle), Rachel Custis (50 freestyle and 100 backstroke), Gomez (100 butterfly), Pohlar (100 butterfly), Smith (100 freestyle), Gabby Selvia (500 freestyle) and Hannah Brattain and Beth Ann Hansen in the 100 breaststroke.

Representing the Eagles in the consolations will be Beasley in the 200 and 500 freestyle, Hansel in the 50 freestyle and the 400 freestyle relay.

North Putnam will return all three relays to the consolations, as well as Elizabeth Alford in the 200 freestyle and 100 freestyle.

Additionally, all divers will compete on Saturday, with diving prelims set to begin at 9 a.m. and swimming and diving finals to follow at 1 p.m.

I never did learn how to swim which is why I went into the Army and not the Navy. I admire those who can swim like and win medals and honors. Way to go!!
