CLOVERDALE -- A 46-year-old Colorado man has been identified as the victim of single-vehicle fatal accident that occurred early Sunday morning on Interstate 70 in southeastern Putnam County.

Tuesday afternoon the Putnam County Coroner's Office identified Alex M. Marques of Cascade, Colo., as the victim of the crash that occurred at 3:07 a.m. near the 44-mile marker, three miles east of Cloverdale.

Putnam County Sheriff's Department officials investigated the accident and determined that Marques' 2001 Nissan Pathfinder was westbound on the ice-covered road, left the roadway on the south side and began to skid down an embankment into the interstate median.

Sgt. Craig Sibbitt reported that the vehicle then became airborne after nosing into the ditch with the front passenger side, and then rolled approximately three times.

While rolling, the vehicle struck a tree with its roof area, uprooting the tree which came to rest on the vehicle's top.

Assisting at the scene were the Cloverdale Volunteer Fire Department, Operation Life and the Putnam County Coroner's Office.
