Swimmers make push to sectional finals
AVON -- Putnam County knows speed.
That much is clear after swimmers from Greencastle, North Putnam and South Putnam grabbed four of the top eight seeds in the 50-yard freestyle during the preliminaries of the Avon Boys' Swimming Sectional Thursday night.
Perhaps the best measure of pure sprinting speed in swimming, the 50 free championship final on Saturday will feature Greencastle senior Nash Firebaugh in the second seed, South Putnam senior Tayler Arnold seeded sixth, North Putnam senior Nick Kaufman seeded seventh and South Putnam junior Zane Crosby seeded eighth.
Add to this Greencastle's Taylor Secrest and Brant Mangrum in the consolation final, and the 50 will be something to see for local swimming fans.
The race was far from the only highlight for local swimmers on Thursday.
Firebaugh grabbed the top seed in the 100 butterfly with a time of 51.46. On Saturday, the senior will be seeking his fourth trip to the IHSAA State Finals.
Joining him the butterfly championship heat is South Putnam's Arnold in the third seed and Greencastle senior Nathan Gardner in the seventh seed.
The Tiger Sharks will return for 16 individual races, including four in championship finals, with two each from Firebaugh (50 free and 100 butterfly) and Gardner (100 butterfly and 100 backstroke).
GHS also returns all three of its relays for championship races, highlighted by second seeds from the 200 medley relay of Gardner, Taylor Secrest, Firebaugh and Elijah Brattain and the 200 freestyle relay of Firebaugh, Jacob Kessler, Brant Mangrum and Brattain.
The North Putnam attack is spearheaded by senior Dane Gray, who returns Saturday seeded third in the 100 backstroke. His time of 55.72 is just .43 seconds behind top seed Garrett Hammons of Avon.
Gray is also seeded fifth in the 200 IM, with the Cougars' other individual championship swim coming from Kaufman in the 50.
The Cougars also have seven consolation finals races.
North Putnam will see action in all three relay championship finals, one of the team's season goals as stated recently by coach Tony Gray.
The 400 freestyle relay team of Gray, Jonah Creamean, Kaufman and Trevor Troyer is seeded third in the final race of the day on Saturday.
Besides the duo of Arnold and Crosby in the 50 free final, South Putnam will also have Arnold back in the 100 butterfly, where he is seeded third with a time of 54.50.
Two Eagle relays will swim in championship finals, both from the No. 5 seed. The medley team of Zach Rayce, Tyler Neumann, Arnold and Crosby swam a 1:47.55, while the 200 free relay team of Arnold, Rayce, Wyatt Nees and Crosby turned in a 1:37.88.
South Putnam will also return one relay and four individuals for consolation finals.
The meet continues at the Avon High School natatorium on Saturday. Diving kicks off at 9 a.m., with the swimming and diving finals set for 1 p.m.
