South Putnam announces kindergarten orientation

Sunday, March 9, 2014

South Putnam Community School Corporation has announced its Kindergarten Orientation dates for the 2014-15 school year.

Orientation will be conducted on April 3 at Central Elementary and April 17 at Fillmore Elementary.

Students and parents should attend the orientation session of the school they will be attending in the fall. Students and parents should plan to be present during the entire session (2-1/2 hours) at their respective school

A variety of information and activities are scheduled, so parents should plan to be present the entire session.

The dates and times for each school are listed below (note that orientations are during the evening this year).

-- Central Elementary on Thursday, April 3 at 5:30 p.m. Phone 653-6175.

-- Fillmore Elementary on Thursday, April 17 at 5:30 p.m. Phone 246-6136.

A child must be five years of age on or before Aug. 1, 2014 to be eligible for kindergarten next year.

To be eligible for first grade, a child must be six years of age on or before Aug. 1, 2014 except for those children who attended a year of kindergarten previously in another school corporation.

During the orientation session, a pre-school screening check will be administered to each child. All children must be screened before being admitted to kindergarten for the first time. Those children who are not screened during the orientation will be screened the first week of enrolling their child in kindergarten this fall.

Parents must present the child's official birth certificate and immunization record as required by law. (An official birth certificate may be obtained from the Board of Health in the county in which your child was born.) It is also requested that all children's Social Security number be on file. These records will be copied and returned to parents.

Each school is taking a survey to determine the number of students who will be participating in orientation. Parents are asked to notify the school if anyone has a child or knows of a child that will be entering school next year.
