Robert G. 'Bob' Larkin

Robert G. (Bob) Larkin, 91, of Plainfield, passed away on Tuesday, March 11, 2014.

Born on Oct. 9, 1922 in Greencastle, he was the son of Vernie and Vanita (Collins) Larkin.

He married Mary Carolyn Wren on Sept. 23, 1945 in Greencastle and she preceded him in death on Dec. 12, 2009.

Robert was a 1944 graduate of Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology (aka Rose Polytechnic Institute) in Terre Haute. Upon graduation, he worked for NACA (now NASA) in Cleveland.

In 1947 he went to work for Allison Gas Turbine (aka Detroit Diesel Allison) in Indianapolis until his retirement in 1982, where he initially worked as a mechanical design engineer and eventually became a design supervisor.

He made significant contributions to the design of many gas turbine engines during his 35-year career and was highly regarded by his peers.

He was a member of Plainfield Christian Church.

He is survived by a son, Thomas Robert Larkin, and wife Ruth; and a daughter, Nancy (Larkin) Thomas, and husband Michael.

Other survivors include five grandchildren, Amber (Larkin) Heerdt and husband Brian, Andrew Larkin, Kelly Thomas, Carrie Thomas, Casey Thomas and one great-granddaughter, Edie Marie Heerdt.

Services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Monday, March 17 at Plainfield Christian Church with burial to follow in Maple Hill Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 2-5 p.m. Sunday, March 16 at Hall-Baker Funeral Home in Plainfield.
