DPU women's lacrosse loses west coast trip's opener

CLAREMONT -- Host Pomona-Pitzer scored three goals in the opening five minutes and held off DePauw for a 16-8 victory. The Tigers dropped to 1-2, while the Sagehens improved to 8-3.

Pomona-Pitzer jumped out to a 3-0 lead, but DePauw added goals from Elizabeth McCracken and Maryclaire Heldring to make it 3-2 with 17:12 left in the first half.

The Sagehens scored the next three in just three minutes including two in a 12-second span and went to the half with a 12-4 advantage.

The hosts stretched the margin to 15-4 before DePauw scored four of the game's final five goals over the last 20 minutes.

McCracken and Taylor Summers each scored a pair for the Tigers, while McCracken also added two assists. Sarah Markowitz and Jana London each scored five for the Sagehens with Aubrey Douglass chipping in three assists.

Pomona-Pitzer held a 36-16 advantage in shots and led in draw controls (15-11), while DePauw held a 23-22 edge in ground balls.

DePauw's Liz Hawkins turned away 13 shots in goal, while Gaby Kukumura had seven saves for the Sagehens.The Tigers return to action on Wednesday, March 26, at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in a 7 p.m. PDT contest.
