DPU drops twinbill at Denison

GRANVILLE, Ohio -- DePauw's offense managed just four runs in its North Coast Athletic Conference doubleheader at Denison monday and seven errors by the Tigers' defense led to five unearned runs as the Big Red swept DePauw by 5-2 and 7-2 scores.

DePauw dropped to 4-9 overall and 0-2 in NCAC West play, while the Big Red improved to 5-7 overall and 2-0 in the conference.

In the opener, Denison scored four of its five runs in the opening frame as the Tigers committed three errors in the inning. Georgie Montes led off by reaching on an error and Charlie Apfelbach followed with a bunt single. Ryan Loehnert then laid down a bunt that DePauw pitcher Jack Peck fielded but threw past first allowing Montes to score.

Zac Lewinski's infield single plated Apfelbach before Andrew Touhy reached on another throwing error on a bunt that brought home Loehnert. Brandon Morgan's sacrifice bunt scored Lewinski and made it 4-0.

DePauw got on the board in the fourth as Cory Meixner drew a one-out walk and scored on Collin Henry's two-out double to center.

Denison countered in the bottom of the fourth as Apfelbach doubled and moved to third on a wild pitch before scoring on Ryan Mulligan's sacrifice fly.

The Tigers' final run cam in the fifth as Pat Lyons walked and advanced to second on Robbie Stein's bunt single. Ryan Allee followed with an RBI single to left.

Stein had three of DePauw's seven hits, while Henry had a pair. Denison totaled eight hits with Apfelbach and Lewinski totaling two each.

DePauw starter Peck dropped to 0-1, while Connor Murphy improved to 2-2 and Kyle Colgain picked up his second save.

In the nightcap, Michael Hartnagel led off the game with a double before Henry walked. Hartnagel then stole second and scored when Stein reached on a fielder's choice.

The Big Red reached the board in the third as Connor Madey led off with a single and moved to second on Tucker Davison's sacrifice bunt. After Apfelbach walked, Loehnert singled to center scoring Madey. Mulligan was hit by a pitch and Lewinski reached on an error that allowed Apfelbach to score.

DePauw knotted the score in the fourth as Matt Dorsett walked with the bases loaded allowing Stein to score.

Davison's double in the fourth scored Brandon Morgan and Apfelbach's single brought home Davison to make it 4-2. The Big Red added one each in the fifth, seventh and eighth innings for the win.

Stein had two of DePauw's four hits, while Davison had two of the Big Red's six hits.

Wyatt Spector dropped to 1-3 for DePauw with Denison's Ian Barry improving to 1-1.

DePauw returns to action on Saturday, April 5, with an NCAC doubleheader at Ohio Wesleyan.
