Mason Asher, 17, of Russellville, is a student athlete at North Putnam High School about to begin his senior golf season. He is the son of Craig and Jeana Asher and the brother of Morgan Asher.

Asher's favorite movie is "Seven Days in Utopia." His favorite singer is Aloe Blacc and his favorite songs are "Money Baby" by K Camp and "Climax" by Usher.

At North Putnam, Asher is also involved in Peer Tutoring, Fellowship of Christian Athletes and the Student Athlete Leadership Group. His favorite subject in school is English.

His past golf accomplishments include being team captain as a junior; two first-place, two second-place and four third-place finishes in 13 golf tournaments last summer; and Club Champion at Turkey Run Golf Club.

He was also the inaugural winner of the Judy Miller Memorial Mental Attitude Award for one of his golf tours.

Banner Graphic: What is your offseason training like?
Mason Asher: In golf there really is no offseason. As soon as the school season is over, I go to the course every day and work on things that I need to work on. Then in June my summer tournaments start with about two a week. Then when school starts back up I'll still go to the course sometimes after school and all day on Saturday and Sundays. During the winter I'll go outside and swing to keep my muscle memory and sometimes hit balls.

BG: What is your favorite athlete or team and why?
MA: My favorite teams are the Chicago Cubs and the Houston Texans. I just have liked those teams for many years. My favorite athlete would be Jordan Speith because he reminds me of my style of play.

BG: What are your team and individual goals for golf this year?
MA: As a team we hope to improve on the things we did last year and reach regionals again and possibly beyond. My individual goal would be to be a good mentor to the underclassmen and to improve throughout the year.

BG: Who has had the biggest influence on you in life?
MA: There've been a lot of people that have had an impact on my life. It's really hard to single them out and I feel like it would be unfair to. My family, peers and friends all have really been there for me all my life.

BG: What lessons have you learned from sports?
MA: I have learned that most of all you need to be patient. There have been times I have played so bad I wanted to quit. But I still kept with it and now it has really paid off for me.

My swing coach Chris Clemens really got me to the point I am now.

BG: How much have you learned over the years from your teammates?
MA: My teammates have been great. I have learned that no matter how mad you are they will be there for you. It's always a fun time on the course. The good thing about golf is even the competitors are rooting for you to play well with them because its fun to play with players that are happy and playing bad golf does make me happy.

BG: What will you miss most about high school sports?
MA: The friendships you acquire through golf. Unlike other sports, you are side-by-side with a competitor for hours at a time and I have made many friends by talking to them throughout a round. Especially in the summer season where you play with people that are sometimes from other states.

BG: What has been your favorite memory of high school?
MA: Probably playing golf. That has been the most fun I've ever had, there has not been a day that we aren't crying from laughter on the course or on the bus. I would not give this up for anything.

BG: What are your plans after high school?
MA: I will attend Wabash College to play golf as a Little Giant. I am undecided on what I will be studying but I am leaning toward English to be a sports journalist. But, I know my future job will revolve around sports in some capacity.
