Tiger baseball take pair at Bishops

Delaware, Ohio- After a rough start in North Coast Athletic Conference play the Tigers evened up their conference record taking a pair of games from Ohio Wesleyan. DePauw grabbed game one by a final score of 9-2 and won the nightcap 8-4.

With the wins, the Tigers improved to 6-9 overall and 2-2 in the NCAC, while the Bishops dropped to 5-11 on the year and 0-2 in NCAC play.

The Tigers jumped out to an early lead in game one, scoring in the first inning on an RBI fielder's choice from Ryan Allee that drove in Michael Hartnagel from third. DePauw would extend their lead to 5-0 with four runs in the third.

Allee had an RBI single scoring Robbie Stein to start the third inning off. Collin Henry doubled down the left field line scoring Zach Starr, followed by a two out single from Connor Einertson that drove in Allee and Henry.

DePauw took advantage of two Ohio Wesleyan errors in the fourth inning to stretch their lead to 8-0. Hartnagel started the inning with a single through the left side followed by Stein who reached safely on a throwing error. Stein and Hartnagel would score when Brendon Pashia's ground ball evaded the Bishops' third basemen. Pashia would steal second and score on a wild pitch.

The Tigers would add another run in the fifth inning without even collecting a hit. JB McCallum led off the inning with a walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Hartnagel's ground out advanced McCallum to third and Stein's sacrifice fly scored McCallum making it 9-0.

Ohio Wesleyan would get on the board in the bottom of the fifth scoring two runs on two hits led by Dalton Martz's RBI double.

Jack Peck (1-1) picked up the win for the Tigers after going five innings and scattering five hits. J.J. Buckey took the loss for the Bishops and dropped to 1-3 on the year.

In game two DePauw was first on the board breaking through for three runs in the third. Matt Dorsett doubled to left field and McCallum drew a walk. Both Tigers were along for the ride when Hartnagel blasted a homer to left field.

DePauw scored two runs in the fifth making it 5-0. Stein led off the inning with a walk and advanced to third on a double by Pashia. Cory Meixner drove both runners in on a single up the middle.

The Bishops scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth, taking advantage of a walk and a hit by pitch from Tigers' starter Michael Chiaro. Pete Stuart relieved Chiaro to record the final out of the fifth.

Up 5-3 DePauw would add a few insurance runs in the top of the seventh. Starr reached first after being hit by a pitch and Pashia's two-run dinger made the score 7-3.

Ohio Wesleyan shrunk the deficit on a leadoff homer by C.J. Tosino, but were unable to do any more damage offensively.

DePauw scored a final run in the top of the ninth on an RBI single from Lyons driving in Starr from third.

Stuart (2-3) picked up the win after going 2.1 innings in relief and allowing just two hits. JT Timmer earned the two-inning save, giving up just one hit. Charles Cooper (2-3) took the loss for Ohio Wesleyan after tossing 3.1 innings.

The Tigers outhit the Bishops 21-11 on the day, including a 6-3 edge on extra-base hits.

The two teams will finish up their series with a doubleheader tomorrow starting at noon.
