Eagle girls' tennis comes back to win

Friday, May 2, 2014

The winds were blowing fiercely when the Eagles' girls tennis team took on Turkey Run Tuesday. The winds couldn't blow out the South Putnam spirit, as the Eagles were able to pull off the comeback victory, winning 3-2. The JV also came in with a dominant performance winning 5-1.

In the No. 1 singles match, Kelly Hayden, had to refocus after the issues with the rain, in order to compete for the win.

"I started off down due to the fact that I thought the match would be cancelled because of bad weather" said Hayden. "After a few points, I finally got into my game mode and took the win 7-5 and 6-0."

Miriah Cherry was happy with her performance in the No. 2 singles set even with the weather elements making it difficult for the athletes.

"I started off strong in my match winning 6-2," Cherry said. "The second set it began to rain and the courts were significantly slick. It was difficult to adjust and play despite the wind. I played my best against the weather but fell short a few games in the set. Overall we got the team win."

This isn't the first time wind and weather have played a part in the South Putnam gameplan. The team opened its season with slippery and cold conditions when the Tiger Cubs visited.

On Monday the match against Southmont was cancelled.

The weather did stay subdued enough Tuesday for the Eagle players to make some comebacks.

"I fell short on the first set, losing 1-6, but I am very proud of the way I bounced back in the second set, winning 6-4," Olivia Arnold said. She finishes the Eagle singles' in the No. 3 singles set. "I finally settled in in the third set and won 6-2. I feel like I am beginning to finally overcome the mental game of tennis."

No. 1 doubles set of Kyndra Boyce and Megan Guthrie are pleased with their effort, if no the result.

We didn't play to our full potential, but we still put up a good fight," Boyce said. "Going to three sets is an accomplishment in itself. In the end we lost, but we hope to do better in the future."

The No. 2 doubles team of Allacyn Arnold and Savannah Adams had better luck, even with the difficult court conditions.

"Though the weather made things difficult, we started off relatively well with a 6-3 win," Arnold said. "We struggled in the second set and could have played better. We tied the second set and ended up winning the tiebreaker 7-3. The match was definitely a good experience with learning to cooperate with the elements."

The skies should clear up for the Eagles as the month turns to May.

The team traveled to South vermillion Thursday and finished too late for publication.
