Head Start enrollment set for Thursday

Tuesday, May 20, 2014

Putnam County Head Start is holding an enrollment opportunity for prenatal mothers and children birth through five years of age. There is no charge for eligible families

for this nationally recognized program that helps parents prepare their children for school.

The enrollment will take place from noon to 7 p.m. on Thursday, May 22 at Area 30 Career Center, 1 N. Calbert Way, Greencastle.

There are two types of Head Start programs offered, the center-based program and the home-based program

The center-based program in Greencastle offers a morning class and an afternoon class with meals and transportation provided.

Head Start also offers a morning class at its Cloverdale site that serves the southern part of Putnam County (Cloverdale as well as Poland, Cunot and Quincy), also offering meals and transportation.

Through home-based Head Start, trained staff come to the home once a week for 90 minutes to work with children and their parents. The sessions are to help parents understand their children's growth and development needs, to equip parents with the skills to effectively teach their children and to foster positive parent/child interaction and relationships.

The home visitor will also organize field trips or center days twice a month, with transportation and meals provided.

Head Start is a free program for qualifying low-income families or children in households receiving T.A.N.F., SSI Disability, are homeless or in foster care. Bring all supporting documentation or proof of income.
