Cloverdale boys' golf team plays well, gets back to back victories

CLAYTON -- On Monday the Clover boys' golf team traveled to Cascade where it beat the Cadets, who had an incomplete team score.

Aaron Whitlock was the low man with 44. The rest of the squad finished with 50 or less, making it a great team-oriented win.

"Aaron played fairly well with the exception of one hole," Clover coach Doug Wokoun said. "He is starting to get some things together. Freddie has been struggling, but I think that he will come around pretty quickly this week.

"Rylan had a very uncharacteristic round, and part of that was a couple of bad breaks."

With early June approaching rapidly, bringing with it the sectional round, it's good to see the team making strides.

"Chase fell off a little in the last couple of holes, but played well through the midpoint of his round," Wokoun said. "Zach had a rough start, but finished very well, and is coming on. He is close to the schedule we set at the beginning for his freshman year, and his progress continues."

Tuesday the Clovers beat Turkey Run, with a score of 172-199. In that game Snyder bounced back and got a course low 38. Mattocks shot a 44, Freddie Fislar shot 45 as did Whitlock. Zach Nichols rounded out the score with 53.

"Chase had a very good round," Wokoun said. "Turkey Run is a pretty good layout, and he managed himself very well. Our other players all had pretty good efforts, but the same old difficulty, playing all nine holes, continues to haunt us. We are putting up pretty good scores for six or seven or eight, but are breaking down somewhere along the way. I really thought we would be able to overcome this by this point, but we are continuing to battle."

The Cloverdale team is 10-5 and will be battling at home on Thursday when they face Martinsville.
