Lawn chair worship kicks off with alumni weekend

Friday, June 6, 2014

With summer comes the return of lawn chair worship sponsored by Gobin Memorial United Methodist Church and First Christian Church. Both churches share the opportunity to provide an early morning worship experience beginning at 8 a.m. on Sundays throughout June and July.

The worship will be held at Bowman Park, which is at the southwest corner of Locust and Hanna streets on the DePauw University Campus. All are invited to come and participate.

In case of inclement weather, the 8 a.m. worship service will be held at Gobin Church, located at 307 Simpson St., during June and First Christian Church, located at 110 S. Indiana St., during July.

Gobin Memorial United Methodist Church will also be welcoming DePauw alumni for this Sunday's DePauw Alumni Worship Service. Rev. Gary Culp, DePauw class of 1964, will be giving the sermon during the worship service. All are welcome to join in this worship service beginning at 10:30 a.m.

Rev. Culp retired after serving as a United Methodist pastor in the state of Pennsylvania. His last appointment was at Pebble Hill Interfaith Community in Doylestown, Pa., which he served for nearly 20 years before retiring in 2001.

While there he also helped found the New Hope Metaphysical Society of Doylestown. Since then, he and his wife of 50 years have lived in Mexico where his kids and grandkids love visiting for long periods of time.

He has become an avid interpreter and theorist of Mayan Cosmology and its influence on this time. Several of his presentations are available on youtube.

On a personal note, he is celebrating a resurrection of sorts after being misdiagnosed for a year with a condition that healed in a week after extensive surgery.

He writes, "Sometimes accepting our mortality can awaken new vision."
