SNAP, credit/debit access available now at Greencastle Farmers' Market

Thursday, June 12, 2014

In an effort to make fresh, local food accessible to more community residents, Friends of the Farmers' Market began on Saturday to accept Hoosier Works cards and credit/debit cards.

The cards can be swiped to obtain $1 Fresh Food tokens by those eligible for SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) or $5 gift certificate tokens for those using credit/debit cards. Tokens can be used as cash at the booths of all participating vendors.

Fresh Food tokens can be used to buy seeds, food-producing plants, produce and other non-hot food items (such as breads, meat, eggs, and preserves).

The goal is to have 100 percent of the market vendors involved in the program, which should raise sales at the Greencastle market for local farmers and craftspeople and help provide nutritious, locally grown food to a broader range of community members.

Participating vendors will display SNAP/EBT posters at their stands. The effort to include farmers' markets in the SNAP/EBT program has been supported by the USDA and the State of Indiana.
