The Indiana High School Golf Coaches Association (ISHCGA) has announced that Cloverdale senior Aaron Whitlock has been named Academic All-State in golf.

Whitlock is one of 15 senior golfers chosen statewide for this prestigious award.

Whitlock, the son of Todd and Dianna Whitlock, was one of 54 nominees for the award this year. A candidate must have achieved a minimum 3.5 grade average, a core SAT score of at least 1000, and rank in the top 15% of his class.

Whitlock will be recognized at the State Championship Banquet at the Golf Club of Indiana on June 20, along with the state championship team and individual, and the All-State team.

"Aaron is an outstanding young man," Cloverdale coach Doug Wokoun said. "He was our captain this season and his leadership was invaluable.

"This award recognizes one part of who he is, but his teammates understand that he brought much more to our team than just a great grade point average. As our only senior, he was like an assistant coach in some ways, and obviously led by example both in the classroom andon the course."

Whitlock's season wasn't without setbacks, but he was able to contribute to Clover golf for the entire season.

"Aaron suffered a semi-severe hand injury in May, but did not miss a match," Wokoun said.

In a senior year, he might have just shut down and finished his season right then.

Aaron not only played through the injury, but he excelled.

His round at the sectional was the highlight of his season. Aaron has always exemplified the best attitude possible, and has worked very hard to improvehis game. We are extremely proud of his accomplishment and the recognition he has received."

Whitlock is the first Clover golfer to receive this award in many years.

Kyle Faletic (2006), Sean Rhine (2008), and Sam Jordan (2011) were all recent Honorable Mention recipients for the Clovers.

"Aaron is in some pretty special company with the young men who have come before him, and I think his accomplishment is something that will set a high standard for all of our golfers in the future," Wokoun said.

Whitlock has been accepted to IUPUI and will attend college starting in the fall semester.
