Putnam County Fair organizers have announced the Putnam County Fair Kickoff event is scheduled for 2 p.m. Sunday, July 6 in the York Automotive Community Building at the Putnam County Fairgrounds.

The Fair Kickoff will feature free ice cream sundaes and free entertainment by Danville native Levi Riggs.

Donations will be accepted to the Fairgrounds Endowment administered by the Putnam County Community Foundation.

The Putnam County Fairgrounds has been a cherished focal point for county attractions since 1954. During the summer it provides a welcoming location for the county fair. During the rest of the year, it offers a convenient, centrally located facility for meetings, weddings and other events.

"Anyone having experience with the benefits of the Putnam County Fair would agree that we need to be sure it will be there 10, 20, 50 or even 100 years from now," Ray Poynter Jr., a Fair Board member, said. "I want to be sure the fairgrounds are there for my grandchildren."

The fairgrounds is not owned by the county or any unit of government and does not receive any tax monies. The Putnam County Fair and 4-H Club Association Inc. is an independent 501(c)3 public charity. The Fair Board relies on the generosity of many individuals and businesses that support it annually and holds other events during year to generate additional revenue for the facilities.

Donors give to the Putnam County Fairgrounds Endowment because the endowment will provide

a sustainable source of revenue for the Putnam County Fairgrounds in perpetuity.

Officials said in 20 years, a donation invested with the Community Foundation will have nearly doubled in size and distributed to the Fairgrounds more than was originally contributed.
