MHAPC to host 10th annual race

Susan and Lee Stewart have been the stewards of the Mental Health America of Putnam County race for the past decade, and they couldn't be happier that it continues to be a success.

The idea behind the race is not just to raise funds for MHAPC but to help raise awareness of both the physical and mental health benefits that running and walking can provide.

At the age of 69, Lee has been running for 57 years, experiencing first-hand the self esteem boosting benefits of running for sport or fun.

"We would like to promote this idea of physical and emotional health to Putnam County," Lee said spiritedly. "If they're happier with them they're probably happier with other people too."

Mental Health America of Putnam County (MHAPC) and the DePauw University cross country team have worked together to put on this fundraising event since its inception in 2004.

"We're very proud of the fact that we've had the race going for a decade, this is a very special year." Susan said.

This year's 4-mile run/2-mile is slated to begin at 8 a.m. Saturday, July 26. Registration costs $25 for adults and is free for children under the age of 10.

The event raises money for a variety of MHAPC programs that are provided to those in need, and it's organizers aim to keep those services local.

"One-hundred percent of the proceeds stay within our county to help promote mental awareness," Susan said.

Both the running and walking courses are to take place on the gravel trails that meander the wooded areas of DePauw University's Nature Park.

One of the routes will hug Big Walnut Creek while the other will take participants along the the rim of the old stone quarry.

"The nature park is a beautiful place for this kind of event," Susan said.

Both paths will have some challenging hills and restrooms will be available along each routes.

Race gloves and sun visors will be available for purchase and a raffle will be held for a one-night stay and breakfast for two people at the Inn at DePauw.

Awards will be given to the first and second place winners as well as a variety of awards for different age groups in each event.

Gift certificates and a drawing for prizes will also be held once the race has started, with winning numbers being placed on a board in so that participants can see if they've won a prize as they finish the race.

Lee remains excited for the event, anxious to see individuals experience running/walking, whether they are interested in competing or may be finishing their very first two or four mile route, maintaining overall personal health as a key reason for participants to get up on their feet.

"So many people wanna come up (to me) and testify what running has done for them, for their self esteem and provided a whole new outlook on life," Lee said. "That's all we're after, is to make people feel good about themselves"

Individuals may get registration forms at the MHAPC office at 10 ½ N. Jackson St. in downtown Greencastle.

Persons can mail their registration forms to Lee Stewart at 59 W. 850 S., Cloverdale, IN 46120; or contact Stewart with inquiries via email at susan.lee.stewart@gmail.com or by telephone at 653-9646.
