DePauw athletes earn academic honors

Three DePauw student-athletes and the women's swimming and diving team were recognized for spring semester academic success by the College Swimming Coaches Association of America.

Individually, rising junior Erin Horne was named First Team Scholar All-America, while rising sophomore Annie Graves and May 2014 graduate Allison Kirby earned honorable mention.

The Scholar All-America award is presented to college and university swimmers and divers who have achieved a cumulative, or term grade point average of 3.5 or higher for the academic term coinciding with their respective NCAA/NAIA/NJCAA/CCCAA Swimming and Diving Championships and have qualified for and competed at the Championship.

The Honorable Mention Scholar All-America Award is presented to college and university swimmers and divers who have achieved a grade point average of 3.5 or higher for the semester, or cumulative average, and have achieved a "B" time standard but did not qualify or compete in their respective national championship.

Divers qualify by competing at their respective championship qualifying meets, zones or NCAA preliminary rounds.

As a team, the Lady Tigers posted a 3.34 grade point average and were among 140 schools to earn the Team Scholar All America Award with at least a 3.0 team grade point average in the spring semester.

Five DePauw student-athletes and the men's swimming and diving team were recognized for spring semester academic success by the College Swimming Coaches Association of America.

Individually, May 2014 graduate Jack Burgeson as well as rising seniors Alex Alfonso and Casey Hooker were named First Team Scholar All-America.

Rising junior Stephen McMurtry and rising sophomore Matt Gullickson earned honorable mention.

As a team, the men's team posted a 3.30 grade point average which was among the top 30 in Division III and earned them the Team Scholar All America Award. DePauw was among 92 Division III schools to earn the distinction with at least a 3.0 grade point average in the spring semester.

DePauw finished 15th at the NCAA Division III Championships in March and third at the North Coast Athletic Conference Championships in February.

Three DePauw student-athletes were honored by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association as Division III Women's Scholar-Athletes, while the squad was named an All-Academic Team.

May 2014 graduates Meg Crowley and Caroline Emhardt as well as rising senior Julie Wittwer (were among 591 Division III women to earn the individual honors. This marked the 12th straight year DePauw individuals were recognized.

Crowley majored in communication and finished the year with a 9-6 singles record and a 17-6 mark in doubles and was a second team all-North Coast Athletic Conference doubles choice and honorable mention in singles.

Emhardt, an English (writing) major, finished with a 21-4 singles record and was 29-8 in doubles play including a trip to the NCAA Division III Championships with teammate Maggie MacPhail. She earned all-America honors after teaming with MacPhail to win the ITA Central Region doubles title in the fall. She also was a first team all-NCAC honoree.

Wittwer is majoring in biochemistry and was 16-7 in singles during the 2013-14 campaign and 24-5 in doubles play.

To earn ITA Scholar-Athlete honors, student-athletes must have at least a 3.50 grade point average for the year and have been enrolled at their current school for at least two semesters.

The team was honored as an All-Academic Team for the fourth straight year.

and 11th time in the last 12 years. In all, 91 Division III schools earned the distinction of having at least a 3.20 grade point average for the year.

The Tigers finished the 2013-14 season with a 19-5 record including an NCAC title before advancing to the Division III round of 16.
