Sousa piece featured Sunday by Brazil Band
BRAZIL -- The Brazil Concert Band, under the direction of Matthew S. Huber, will present "El Capitan and His Princess" on Sunday, Aug. 10.
The free concert begins at 8 p.m. in Brazil's Forest Park bandshell, rain or shine.
John Philip Sousa's most successful operetta was "El Capitan." The BCB will feature two selections from this work, including the waltzes and the famous march.
Karl L. King wrote more than 500 works for band with his mysterious "The Princess Of India" being his best known overture.
Arthur Pryor, Sousa's premiere trombonist, eventually left the Sousa Band to form his own traveling concert band. One of his most famous pieces is "The Whistler and His Dog."
In 1901, composer Lee Johnson wrote "The Death of Custer" to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Battle of Little Big Horn.
In 2004, the Brazil Concert Band performed on Ellis Island during its tour of New York City. While in NYC, the BCB took in the Broadway musical, "Chicago" and soon afterward purchased Kander's medley overture.
Rounding out this week's show will be "Foshay Tower Washington Memorial" by Sousa, "The Florentiner" by Julius Fucik, Jaime Texidor's "Amparito Roca" and "Trombone Blues" by Fred Jewell.
