Semi crashes on Waterworks Hill, closes 231

Saturday, August 9, 2014

Local emergency units were dispatched to a single-vehicle wreck on Water Works Hill on U.S. 231, just north of the Putnam County Fairgrounds just after 4:30 p.m. Saturday. The 2007 International semi-truck driven by Kyle J. Klingenberg, 39, Illinois, was said to have jackknifed into a guardrail after his brakes locked up while trying to slow for the work zone due to the wet road conditions. The accident resulted in the trailer, which was empty at the time, disconnecting from the cab and tipping over on its side. Nobody was hurt during the crash. Following the accident, the semi leaked fuel and HazMat crews were on scene to aid with the cleanup. The road was completely closed in both directions for roughly five hours. Assisting the Putnam County Sheriff's Department at the scene were the Greencastle Police Department, Greencastle Fire Department and the Bainbridge Volunteer Fire Department. Damage was estimated at $25,001-$50,000.

  • Wow, I hope the driver is ok. Pretty bad after looking at the truck. We were in the line of traffic on the Greencastle side and took the long way around to get to the north side of the bridge.

  • The driver is in the picture above the comments....looking at the trailer! He is a lucky guy! He said he was a Christian and I said it is a good thing - because God was looking out for you!!!
