Electric jazz violinist Cathy Morris will bring her trio to Greencastle Wednesday evening for the next-to-last event of the 2014 Greencastle Summer Music Festival season.

Staged in the sanctuary of Gobin Memorial United Methodist Church, the free concert begins at 7:30 p.m.

The festival, dedicated to bringing the community together with "friends making music for friends," is funded by individual and business donors, the Inn at DePauw, the DePauw University School of Music, and an endowment at the Putnam County Community Foundation.

"We love bringing in a variety of artists and styles to the festival, which started as a strictly classical-music series 10 years ago," explained Eric Edberg, festival founder and artistic director and a DePauw music professor.

"I'm very excited to have Cathy who is so tremendously admired in the Indiana musical community, here in Greencastle at last," added Edberg. "I've known her for many years now and have enjoyed playing chamber music with her many times."

Morris has a passion for sharing music to audiences of all ages, performing her distinctive "Party Jazz" sound of eclectic originals. A staple in the Midwest Arts Community for 20 years as a performer, she is active in a broad range of arenas, concert and festival stages, as well as major events such as the World Swimming Championships opening ceremonies, the Indianapolis International Violin Competition and repeatedly in front of 250,000 people at the Formula One and Indy 500 races.

Morris and her band have opened for Al Jareau, The Commodores, Burt Bacharach, George Benson, Chuck Mangione, Rick Braun and fourPlay to name a few and can regularly be seen as the guest soloists performing her original music with professional and student orchestras and jazz bands.

As a musical ambassador she has performed for world leaders and dignitaries, including Mikail Gorbachev, the Prince and Princess of Serbia, President Bill Clinton, Sen. Hillary Clinton and First Lady Laura Bush among others.

As a recording artist she has five CDs of original music in addition to her holiday disc "An Electric Violin Christmas," "Cathy Morris Latin Jazz," "Sacred Romance" and the 2012 release, "Music For Wellness."

As an educator it's her unending commitment to children that puts her in front of and collaborating with thousands of students each year, performing convocations, conducting workshops and side-by-side concerts.

The Greencastle Summer Music Festival's final concert of 2014, the "Stars of the DePauw School of Music," will feature the school's top returning performers on Thursday, Aug. 21 (shifted from Wednesday) at 7:30 p.m. in Gobin Church.
