Tiger Cubs open cross country season with win over W. Vigo
Greencastle's cross country team opened its season on its home course at the fairgrounds and the runners proved to be more than ready to get their season under way. The girls outpaced West Vigo with a score of 16-54.
"Considering the temperature I was a little concerned about the conditioning," said Greencastle coach Garry Anderson. "That young man from West Vigo, he's just a pretty tough kid and he showed it today. But I was pleased with our times and our groupings. We've told them all to hold off until the 1k and then to go after that. They did exactly as they were told. I was really pleased."
The girls ran first and GHS finished with the top four times and eight of the top ten places with Corrie Romer finishing first.
Brittany Welker, a first-time runner on the cross country team, noted the difficulty of the course but also said she had a lot of fun.
"It was rough," she said. "It was my first meet ever, but I think I did well and I finished with a decent time for a hard course."
Greencastle will be traveling to the Fountain Square Invite where coaches and players alike have named the course the most difficult of the season. So the track at the Putnam County Fairgrounds made a good starting point for the Tiger Cubs.
"It would be a six or a seven (out of 10)," said Welker of the fairgrounds "just because we have two big hills you have to go up. It's a constant uphill down hill course."
The boys took first place with a score of 21-40, even though Jonah Eckert, from West Vigo finished way ahead of the pack. A Greencastle pack finished in second through fifth place completing the pack running technique that Anderson has been stressing.
"If we can get in packs of three to five that's good," Anderson said. "You may have a leader or someone in second but if you can get into packs then that's good."
The first pack of Tiger Cub boys finished in under 18 minutes with Taylor Secrest recording a time of 17:48.
"I was satisfied with our performance today," Secrest said. "I think we did well as a whole. I cant wait to see what the future holds. (The course) is deceivingly difficult because the hills, while they're not a big incline they are gradual and they last quite a while. So you have to pace yourself."
The Tiger Cubs will see the Fountain Square course on Saturday at 9 a.m.
