CLOVERDALE -- Cloverdale Community School Corporation's Superintendent Carrie Milner had previously shocked the audience with news of her retirement during the school board's monthly meeting back in June.

Saying few words at the time, Milner advised the public that she would be retiring from her position during the fall semester of the 2014-15 school year and was thus giving the board notice to advertise the open position. It was announced during the board's monthly meeting that Milner's last day will officially be Monday, Sept. 29.

"This is kind of tough to do," Milner had previously said. "I do plan to leave this year, I will wait until the middle of our next fall semester. There's so many things to get done over the summer in particular the budget and finishing up our drainage project along with all kinds of things that are going to pop up. I wanted to bring it to your attention now so that the search process can begin."

Over the years, Milner, a Greencastle native, has served the district in a variety of positions and worked with Superintendents John McKinney, Steve Wittenauer, Terry Inlow and Damon Peigh before assuming her current position in 2005.

While serving as the superintendent, Milner has worked with many different board members and has overseen significant improvements within the district. Three major facility projects have taken place during the last several years under Milner's guidance, including the most recent building and drainage updates.

"Three major facility projects have taken place during the last several years, allowing the district to boast an exceptional rating for all buildings and grounds," Milner noted. "In addition to the upgrades to facilities, the corporation has seen steady growth in scores and graduation rates to include amazing academic progress this year. The district received AdvancEd District accreditation in 2012 and continues to excel with a growing and innovative Teacher Leadership program."

Over the years, Milner has worked to obtain nearly $3 million in outside grants, which have provided funds for before and after school programs, professional development and leadership programs for teachers as well as additional transportation for a second evening route to allow students and their families ample opportunities for both academic and athletic involvement.

"The 4-Community Putnam County grant opened the door for the Knoy Community Resource Center to be fellowed by two $2.3 million 21st Century Learning Communities Center grants -- one for the K-8 program and one for the 9-12 building. These grants allowed us to do so much more than we could have ever done on our own," Milner explained. "The CHS Western Indiana Learning Center grant includes 20 additional districts all working collaboratively toward career and college readiness."

Milner currently serves on the Putnam County Economic Development board representing Putnam County superintendents. She has also been chair of the Area 30 Career Center Board for the past two years and plans on continuing to work with the Ivy Tech as she beings a new position on the Central Indiana Regional Board.

"I'm looking forward to doing things with my family," Milner said of her upcoming retirement. "I'll miss all the people, the good programs, the students and faculty. This has been a good place to call home for a very long time. This is an exciting community and there are going to be a lot of really good things coming this way."

Taking over her position will be former Owen Valley Superintendent Greg Linton. He will begin his new position on Friday, Sept. 26 with a contract running until June 30, 2017. Milner's official last day will be on Monday, Sept. 29.

"He'll do a great job. I've worked with him, he's a really nice guy," Milner said. "I appreciate the many years I've had with the district and am proud of the many accomplishments we've made happen together."
