Area 30 gets some welcomed news

The Area 30 Career Center Board of Directors met for its monthly meeting on Tuesday morning to not only discuss some upcoming events, but to also share some news.

Executive Director Lora Busch started off the meeting by announcing that Area 30 had recently been awarded a $43,000 grant from the Duke Energy Foundation.

"The competitive grant was awarded for the purchase of the final equipment needed for the WIRED and Welding programs," Busch said. "It's pretty exciting. I didn't think we were going to get that one, but we did."

Busch noted that the equipment will also be utilized by numerous other Area 30 programs.

Busch also announced that the Career Center will once again be hosting the IACAC sanctioned Putnam County Area College Fair on Wednesday, Oct. 8 at the Dixie Chopper Business Center from 5:30-7 p.m. It is its sixth year hosting the event, and the board is hoping for a large turnout.

Busch also informed the board that they are still currently looking for participants for the Area 30 Career Center Golf Scramble on Saturday, Sept. 20, which will benefit its scholarship program.

The scramble will be played at Clover Meadows Golf Course and will include two flights, which begin at both 8:30 a.m. and 2 pm.

The objective of the scramble is to raise money in hopes of presenting scholarships to as many deserving students as possible during its senior awards banquet in May. Scholarships are awarded to students who are either entering the workforce or pursuing postsecondary education and training. Last year the scramble raised more than $3,500.

There will be prizes and giveaways for both morning and afternoon flights along with a $10,000 hole-in-one prize.

For a four-person team the cost is $200 with mulligans (two per person) at $5 each. Skirts, a limit of two per team, cost $10 each.

Those interested in participating should contact Zane Earles at 653-3515 ext. 2136 or zearles@area30.k12.in.us.

Ending out the meeting, Busch also made a point to thank Cloverdale Superintendent Carrie Milner, who will be retiring at the end of September.

"Dr. Milner has been instrumental in getting new programs started and improving existing programs," Busch said. "She has attended numerous student recognition events each year and her support for the Career Center staff has been unwavering."
