Constitution Week time to celebrate

Tuesday, September 16, 2014

To the Editor:

Sept. 17-23 is annually designated as Constitution Week in the United States. Sept. 17 was proclaimed in 1952 as "Citizenship Day" to honor those who had come of age, reached the voting age, and those who had naturalized during the past year.

With a movement to honor the Constitution, which had been signed Sept. 17, 1787, Congress approved a joint resolution authorizing the president to proclaim Constitution Week starting Sept. 17 of each year.

The purpose of the former Citizenship Day and Constitution Week is to strengthen our nation dedicated to liberty and justice.

Citizenship and the Constitution are inseparable, commemorating the United States Constitution and commemorating United States Citizenship. This is the time for a thoughful study and consideration of the events that led to the framing of the Constitution and the means for preserving it from those who destroy or weaken it.

Once each year on Sept. 17, all four pages of the original signed Constitution are placed on public display in the Rotunda of the National Archives Building in Washington, D.C.

Washburn Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, urges all citizens to make an individual commitment to read the Constitution for a better understanding of the importance of this document in our daily lives.

Remember to fly our flag with pride during Constitution Week. What better way to acknowledge our good fortune to live in the country with the oldest Constitution in use in the world today.
