DePauw looks to win on road

DePauw takes to the road for the first time during the 2014 season as it opens North Coast Athletic Conference play at Wittenberg.

The teams are meeting for just the ninth time and third as NCAC competitors.

DePauw is 1-0 after a 31-13 win over Se- wanee on September 6, while Wittenberg is 0-1 following a 22-16 loss to Butler on September 6.

Host DePauw scored on five straight possessions and notched a 31-13 win over Sewanee in the season opener for both schools on Nick Mourouzis Field at Blackstock Stadium.

Sewanee outgained DePauw, 359-313, and held a 19-18 edge in first downs, but the hosts converted 9 of 13 third downs, didn't commit a turnover and capitalized on all four red-zone chances.

Quarterback Matt Hunt led DePauw with 88 rushing yards, while Amen Galley followed with 37 as the Tigers averaged 5.1 yards per carry.

Hunt completed 11 of 19 passes for 128 yards and one score with four going to Jay D. Robinson for 57 yards.

Will Longthorne led DePauw with 12 tackles, while Thomas Gray added nine and Adam Folta eight along with an interception.

Wittenberg opened with a 22-16 loss to NCAA Division I FCS Butler, but nearly came back from a 22-3 fourth-quarter deficit against the Bulldogs.

Quarterback Zac Jenkins completed 30 of 49 passes for 363 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions.

Zach Culvahouse caught 14 passes for 130 yards and two scores, while Corey Stump hauled in 10 for 168 yards.

Sean Gary rushed 76 yards in 20 attempts.

Defensively, Winston Thomas paced Wittenberg in the opener with 13 tackles, while Nick Gibson added eight and Gabe Cunningham seven.

Evan Killilea recorded the lone interception for the Tigers.

Culvahouse ranks second in Division III in recep- tions per game, while Stump is eighth. Thomas is fifth in solo tackles per contest.

TIGERS NOTES

The Tigers are 64-36 dating back to the beginning of the 2004 season and are 43-28 over the last seven seasons this marks the 74th season of play at Blackstock Stadium where DePauw teams have posted a 198-137-5 record for a .590 winning percentage.

DePauw is tied for 20th among Division III schools with 551 wins in 127 seasons .

Wittenberg ranks second with 727 wins after holding the top spot for several years ... in 10 career games, Matt Hunt has tossed 18 touchdown passes and been intercepted only three times.

DePauw is second in Division III with a 69.2 percent third down conversion rate.
