Naked driver tased in I-70 incident

Tuesday, September 23, 2014

Receiving a 911 call about 3 p.m. Tuesday, authorities investigated a possible accident with injury along Interstate 70 eastbound near the 34-mile marker, seven miles west of Cloverdale.

Indiana State Police Trooper Mike Wood responded and noticed a 2003 Chevrolet Silverado partially on the shoulder and partially in a grassy ditch, its front end up against the guardrail.

Suspect's pickup truck is wedged up against a guardrail near the 34-mile marker of eastbound Interstate 70 in Putnam County Tuesday afternoon.

The 33-year-old driver, a Bartlesville, Okla., man, was slumped over the steering wheel and acting suspiciously.

Moments later, he began striking his head on the truck window and threw himself onto the ground, striking his head on the cement.

Standing up and bleeding from self-inflicted injuries, the suspect removed his clothing, and appeared to advance on the trooper.

Wood radioed for assistance and deployed his taser device, which ultimately stopped the advancing suspect.

Trooper Mike Finney quickly arrived and the two troopers were able to subdue the suspect and take him into custody.

The suspect was initially transported to Putnam County Hospital for treatment of his injuries and later transferred to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis for additional treatment and observation. His injuries do not appear to be life-threatening, authorities said.

Further investigation revealed the suspect's pickup was not involved in a crash at the scene.

Criminal charges are pending against the suspect driver. Pending toxicology results, additional charges may be filed.

After his hospital treatment and subsequent preliminary charges are filed, the suspect's name will be released, pursuant to ISP regulations regarding releasing names of suspects prior to their actual arrest.

Assisting in the incident were multiple troopers from the Putnamville Post, Putnam County Sheriff's Office deputies, Cloverdale Police Department personnel and Putnam County Operation Life paramedics.
