SR 75 to get chip-and-seal treatment between U.S. 36, 40

COATESVILLE -- Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) maintenance crews will begin a pavement preservation project on State Road 75 in western Hendricks County on or after Monday, Sept. 29.

SR 75 is due to be chip-and-sealed from U.S. 36 to U.S. 40.

Traffic will be controlled by arrow boards and flagmen in the work area. Work on the roadway is scheduled to last through Thursday, Oct. 2.

The chip-and-seal process consists of distributing a liquid asphalt emulsion on the roadway and covering the liquid asphalt with crushed stone to provide a new wearing surface.

Chip-sealing extends the life of a roadway by protecting it from moisture, ultra-violet degradation and any other exposures that could damage a roadway, INDOT officials said.

Crews then sweep off excess stone and follow with a fog sealing process. The fog seal is applied on top of the chip-seal work and is a light application of asphalt material that can lock in loose stone and help with dust control.

It is recommended when traveling on a recently chip-sealed road to slow down and allow additional space between vehicles.

Loose stone, present on the roadway during the initial cure of the asphalt, can damage windshields and paint on vehicles following too closely.
