It may not be October yet but the Greencastle Parks and Recreation Department is ready for some pumpkin carving, pumpkin painting, making costumes, but especially having some spooky fun with haunted houses.

The Parks and Recreation Department has Halloween-themed opportunities throughout October and is inviting participation in its Brickmania/Gingerbread Haunted House competition on Thursday, Oct. 2 at Greencastle City Hall.

The idea behind the Brickmania: Haunted House contest is to create a haunted house with a spooky theme and display it all day in Greencastle City Hall.

Entries must be made entirely of Lego-type building blocks -- both the house and its decorations. Entries must be carried into City Hall, where they will be displayed and then judged at the monthly Park Board meeting that evening. Afterward, it can be taken home and displayed through Halloween. Entries can be registered at City Hall on Oct. 1 between 3:30 and 4:30 p.m. or between 8 and 9 a.m. on Oct. 2.

The idea behind the Gingerbread: Haunted House contest is to Halloween twist on an old Christmas-time tradition. Create a gingerbread house with a spooking theme and display it all day in Greencastle City Hall.

All ingredients -- house and decorations -- must be edible.
