GHS senior boys' tennis honored in Saturday's win
The Greencastle boys' tennis team hosted its final home game for the class of 2015 players Saturday morning against a competitive Danville team. The Tiger Cubs sent their seniors away with a victory, 4-1.
Honored seniors for the match were Christian Ritchey, Jason Ummel, Adam Gerard, Kaleb Fleming and Jake Mangrum.
"I am very honored to have had the chance to coach these young men this season," Tiger Cubs' coach Kevin Rowe said. "Today was a good 4-1 win."
Ritchey fought in the No.1 singles position but was the only Greencastle player unable to pull away with a victory.
He fought immensely, but fell in three sets, 2-6, 6-3 and 6-3 . His match was against Zach Saito.
In the No. 2 singles Jed Fajt of Greencastle beat Corey Clark in two sets.
Fajt pounded Clark and easily won both sets, 6-0 and 6-1.
Ummel rounded out the singles matches. Although his sets were closer than Fajt's, he secured the win in two sets, 6-4 and 6-3 over Gavin Hensely.
While the singles matched occurred, the doubles matches also took place on two courts. Fleming and Mangrum teamed up for the No. 1 doubles and Gerard and Nathan Gobert finished out the doubles.
Fleming and Mangrum held a tight matchup with DJ Woodard and Jack Binkley.
They won the match in three sets, 7-6, 5-7 and 6-3 .
Gerard and Gobert were way too much for Jacob Galloway and Kyle Clark. They won in two sets, 6-0 and 6-3.
The IHSAA tennis sectionals start Wednesday and the Tiger Cubs partake in their sectional at Northview High School. The matchup drawing is not until Monday, but Rowe's focus is on the tournament.
"Our matchups with Danville are always competitive," Rowe said. "This one was no different. We turn our focus to sectionals next week."
