Edward John Surber, 83, of Bainbridge, passed away on Friday, Oct. 3, 2014.

Ed was born on Jan. 5, 1931 near Lamar, Neb., the son of Harry P. Surber and Fern Kaiser Surber.

Around the age of eight, Ed moved from Nebraska to Indiana with his family. A lifelong farmer, Ed spent many years working on the family farm with his dad.

In 1954, Ed was drafted into the United States Army. He trained at Camp Chaffee, Ark., and honorably served his country with the Fifth Armored Division. Ed was in the "C" Company, 34th Medium Battalion in Germany where he was a mechanic and an ambulance driver.

On Nov. 20, 1957, he married Anita Keith in the Methodist Church in Danbury, Neb.

Ed attended the Bainbridge United Methodist Church, and was a member of the NRA and Farm Bureau.

Ed's passions were his family, farming, hunting, fishing and making Indian arrowheads.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Florence Norton, and his daughter, Barbara Cullison.

Surviving are his wife of 56 years, Anita; his son, Paul Surber and wife Rena; son-in-law, Ernie Cullison; nine grandchildren, Katie Surber and companion Josh Hickman, Heidi Kiger and husband David, Jamie Cullison and companion Donnie Schilling, Lyndsey Pate and husband Chris, Derek Cullison and wife Paige, Destinee Haselman, Courtney Stout, Jackie Ramsay and husband Jon, and Shawn Stout and companion Kristen Miller; and 11 great-grandchildren, Damon Surber, Micah Kiger, Amarah Kiger, Wyatt Farrow, Bentley Cullison, Logan Cullison, Wade Warren, Isaiah Ramsay, Liam Ramsay, Owen Ramsay and Devyn Andrus.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, Oct. 6 at Hopkins-Rector Funeral Home, Greencastle, with Pastor Randall Boys officiating. Interment will follow at Brick Chapel Cemetery.

The family will receive friends on Monday from noon until time of services at the funeral home.
