GMS scores perfect 15 at county tourney

A perfect score of 15 was achieved by the Greencastle Middle School girls' cross country team at the county championship meet on Tuesday.

GMS eighth-grader Emma Wilson won the 3K event with a time of 11:25.71. Others in the top five were Seelye Stoffregen in second, Sydney Lewis in third, Kennedy Trigg in fourth and Mika Mozawa in fifth.

Greencastle coach Ivonne Martinez said that the goal of the girls team was to get a perfect score.

"We strategized and achieved that. A couple of the eighth grade girls really stood out tonight. Mika [Mozawa] had been battling against the top Cloverdale girl all season. Although it took a lot of determination and some help from her teammates, she accomplished it tonight," Martinez said.

Cloverdale's Payton Lyons finished sixth for her team in a time of 13:44.13, with teammates Cheslie Edwards and Macie Gough running seventh and eighth.

North Putnam's Grace Elmore finished 10th for her team in a time of 15:10.92, with Anna Haste in 11th, Taylor Hensley in 14th and Brittany Beavers in 15th.

South Putnam's Naomie Martinez was top finisher for her team in 13th place with a time of 15:23, with Alyssa Menke in 21st with a time of 16:59.51.

In the middle school boys 3K, the race was won by Greencastle sixth-grader Ian Frank in a time of 12:24.58.

Brady Koosman of Cloverdale placed second in a time of 12:44.61. South Putnam's Karl Egold finished third in a time of 13:09.93. North Putnam's Joe Kirkham placed ninth in 13:57.93.
