Museum to host call-out for prospective volunteers Oct. 29

Thursday, October 23, 2014

The Putnam County Museum will host a call-out for prospective volunteers on Wednesday, Oct. 29 from 4-7 p.m.

Community members are invited to come to the museum, located at 1105 N. Jackson St., Greencastle, and explore the many ways to get involved.

Volunteers fill a variety of roles, including greeting and guiding museum visitors, organizing events, doing research, mounting exhibits and helping out with the facility and office work. In fact, volunteers are behind almost everything that happens at the museum.

"I love volunteering at the museum because it gives me the opportunity to explore Putnam County's local history through research, exhibit design, and dialogue with visitors," Vicky Krider said. "It's simply fun to help breathe life into our past."

Director Kit Newkirk readily agrees.

"People occasionally say they haven't volunteered or joined the museum because they haven't been asked," Newkirk said. "So we're holding this call-out to let people know we really do want their time and talents."

The museum welcomes volunteers age 14 and older and is also happy to work with organized groups of younger people such as scouts and church groups.

During the call-out, those interested in volunteering can investigate opportunities that match their skills and interests.

For more information about the call-out or volunteer opportunities at the museum, persons may call 653-8419 or email kit@PutnamCountyMuseum.org.
