GHS volleyball season ends in sectional semi-final
SPENCER -- After Thursday night's emotional five-game win over Edgewood in the opening round of the Owen Valley IHSAA volleyball sectional 28, Lady Tiger Cub coach Maggie Walters knew that her squad could not fall behind state ranked Northview in Saturday's semi-final match if her squad was to advance to champion ship match. Sadly that's what her varsity squad did in losing in three games 3-0.
In the opening game Greencastle started out with a 2-0 lead off a kill by junior Tera Amis. Teams traded scores until the Lady Knights went on a 5-0 run to go up 11-5. Following a Greencastle time out a long serve gave the ball back to the Tiger Cubs. Allison White served an ace to make the score 11-7
Northview got the serve back and went up 15-8, on its way to the 25-15 first game win. "We came out a little intimidated by their front row attack and it kind of set the tone for the opening match," Walters said after the game.
In game two the Lady Knights got off to a 7-0 lead off sharp serving by senior Taylor Hess. A time out by Walters stopped the scoring. After trading scores Greencastle senior standout Quinci Miller took a perfect set from Olivia Divine and killed it between two Northview players to make the score 11-4. The Lady Knights would add another run of 8-0 to go up 19-6. They added a 4-0 run to win game two 25-8.
"In game one we passed really well and stuck with them at first, and when our passing went by the way we got not so disciplined, that's where we go into trouble. In game two they jumped out to the big early lead and we knew if we were to play well and win we couldn't let them do that," Walters said.
Game No. 3 went back and forth following another kill by Miller; the score was 6-4 Northview. An 8-0 run increased their lead to 14-5. It would be as close as our ladies would get as Northview punched their ticket to the final game with the 25-9 win
After the heartbreaking loss Walters talked about her seniors and what they meant to the Greencastle volleyball program. "I'm really proud of them, Divine, Miller, Madison Trout, and Tera Amis, when I took the job two years ago they hadn't won many games in past years, and those four helped turn this program around and they should be proud of that.
I'm so proud of the girls and the years we've had. They did an awesome job this season and beat some great teams that no one thought we could beat, they proved they're a good team and that they can play with the number five team in the state."
For Greencastle, Miller had seven kills and five blocks. Taylor Stoltey had two service points; White also added two service points. Northview got 16 service points from Taylor Hess and four kills from junior Morgan Stearley in the win.
The Lady Tiger Cubs finished the regular season with a 17-8 record. Number five ranked Northview advanced to the championship game against the Owen Valley/Brown County winner.
