CRYSTAL RIVER, Fla. -- Two people -- including a 75-year-old Putnam County woman -- died when they were struck by a wrong-way driver on U.S. 19 near Crystal River, the Florida Highway Patrol reports.

The crash occurred Monday night near Crystal River when Marianne J. Campbell, 51, of Fort Lauderdale, was driving a 2002 Nissan Xterra southbound in a northbound lane of U.S. 19. She struck a 2009 Chevrolet HHR driven by 74-year-old Ruby Pearl Ray of Nixa, Mo.

Troopers say Ray died at the scene of the head-on crash.

Her 75-year-old passenger, Greta Overbay of Roachdale, died later from her injuries at Seven Rivers Hospital.

Campbell was airlifted in critical condition to a hospital in Ocala.

An investigation into why Campbell was driving on the wrong side of the highway, or whether she had been drinking, is under way, authorities said.

  • I used to live in that area of Florida. I have personally seen drivers going the wrong way on U.S. 19 and in all cases they were too drunk to be driving anyway. Too bad a person from Putnam county had to die in that part of Florida. So sad.
