Vera June Evens

Vera June Evens, 97, of Greencastle, passed away on Sunday, Nov. 2, 2014 at Mill Pond Health Campus.

Born June 22, 1917 in Madison Township in Putnam County, she was the daughter of Clarence F. and Orpha (Martin) Rowings. Vera graduated from Greencastle High School in 1935, and received her BS degree in elementary education from Indiana State University, followed by her master's degree from DePauw University. She married Morris A. Evens on June 19, 1942 and preceded her in death in 1979, as well as her parents in 1976 and 1977.

Vera was a dedicated teacher and her long teaching career included several years in the Bridgeton, Walnut Grove and Barnard school systems. However, the many years that she spent in the Bainbridge School System were the pride of her teaching career.

She was a longtime member of the Long Branch Church of Christ and later the Church of Christ in Greencastle. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma and the Indiana Retired Teachers' Association. Until the last few years, she enjoyed her membership in the Eskimo Bridge Club and the Putnam County Hospital Guild. She was a former member of the Order of Eastern Star.

Survivors include her sons Martin A. Evens of Bainbridge and Kenton L. Evens of Cloverdale, five grandchildren, great-grandchildren, brother-in-law Paul Evens of Ohio and cousin Fauneil Stewart of Greencastle.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 6 at the Hopkins-Rector Funeral Home with Rev. Melinda Huffman (who was a former third grade student of Mrs. Evens) officiating. Interment will follow at the Brick Chapel Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. until time of service on Thursday at the funeral home
