WEST TERRE HAUTE -- The Greencastle girls' varsity basketball team traveled to West Vigo and won their second straight game of the young season. The Lady Tiger Cubs won 72-54. They will look for their third straight win at Beech Grove on Saturday evening.

Greencastle came out on fire to start the game hitting on 4 of 6 shots behind the three-point line. Senior standout Delanie Stoltey hit two, her second one coming at the 3:47 mark to put her squad up 13-4. Stoltey followed it up with a steal and nice pass to senior Jessica Lenihan breaking down the middle of the lane for two, and a 15-4 lead.

Senior Callan Taylor added a long three and the first quarter ended with Greencastle up 20-12.

Greencastle skipper Bradley Key said "It's the kind of start you can expect to get early in the season when you have a team that is as experienced as we are. We came out and shot the ball well and we were very pleased, it's a good sign when you come out hitting threes like we did and get 20 points in the first quarter.

"Against Owen Valley, Stoltey played well but didn't show up in the scoring column, but tonight she stepped up. It's a positive of our team this year when someone different can step up each night."

Stoltey continued her hot shooting in the second period adding her third three at the 3:47 mark to put Greencastle up 27-17. Lenihan added a nice turnaround jumper from ten feet with 2:51 to play in the half making the score 29-22 Greencastle.

The Tiger Cubs went into the half time break up 34-28. Greencastle hit 6 of 11 from behind the three point line. For the half they hit 6 of 25 from the inside of the three point line.

"West Vigo changed up their defense going from a half court trap to a full court 2-2-1there in the first half. But we adjusted well and I was happy we handled it," Key said.

Greencastle won the battle of the boards in the first half 15-9.

The third quarter saw Greencastle pick up where it started with a 6-0 run to go up 40-28, their biggest lead at the time. Stoltey hit her fourth and final three of the night putting her team up 12. Following a West Vigo basket by senior center Shyanne Elkins, the Tiger Cubs increased their lead with another 6-0 run.

Following two straight steals by Taylor, one leading to a layup and the second one to a pair of free throws, the Tiger Cubs went up 50-40. Lenihan sent the game into the final quarter when she took a nice pass from Paige Bragg, and hit the layup and was fouled. She made the free throw for the 53-40 lead.

The final quarter was all Greencastle as it outscored the host 19-12 to gain the 72-54 win. Greencastle got balanced scoring as Taylor finished with 18, Lenihan had 17, Stoltey 12 and Bragg 11 points. Junior Paige Bragg added 8, Madison Trout, Lauren Bridgewater and Mia Stevens all had 2 points each.

After the game coach Key added, "Overall I'm pleased with our 2-0 start. Tomorrow night we go to Beech Grove. It should be a good match up for us. We had several defenses throw at us tonight and we adjusted to them well. We shot well from the field and from the free throw line. Wed hit 15 of 22 for 68 percent and I'll take that."

The Tiger Cubs also took the junior varsity game, winning 36-26. Gracie Smith had a game high of 14 points to lead the winners followed by Mia Stevens with 12. The young Cubs also improved to 2-0 on the season with the win.

Greencastle travels to Beech Grove Saturday night.
