County Jail

Three people were booked into the Putnam County Jail recently.

* At 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Everett Lee Meeker, 61, Terre Haute, was arrested for invasion of privacy.

At 4:05 p.m., Kevin Michael Bain, 29, Cloverdale, was charged with a probation violation.

* At 9:45 a.m. on Wednesday, Terrence Singleton Hopson, 33, Indianapolis, was arrested on a probation violation.

City Police

One recent arrest was reported by Greencastle City Police officers.

-- At 3:44 p.m. Tuesday, Stacey Northington, 24, Greencastle, was arrested at a West Columbia Street residence by Officer Jeff Modlin.

Lodged in the Putnam County Jail, she faces charges of battery and disorderly conduct.

One summons was written recently by city officers.

-- At 11:02 p.m. Friday, Nov. 14, Joseph Zaborski, 20, Greencastle, was issued a summons for possession of paraphernalia.

Zaborski was stopped on South College Avenue by Capt. Chris Jones.

One minor accident was investigated recently by city officers.

-- At 12:31 p.m. Tuesday, a one-vehicle mishap occurred on the lot at Countrymark, 1207 Bloomington St., as Patrick Labhart, 30, Greencastle, hit a patch of ice while turning into the gas station.

The 2013 Dodge Ram the conservation officer was driving struck a pump protection pipe as it slid toward the gas pumps.

Total damage was estimated by Sgt. Terry Eastham at $2,500-$5,000.

Sheriff's Department

* At 11:27 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 14, Jeanne M. Shillings, 60, Greencastle, was southbound on U.S. 231 near County Road 500 North.

Shillings advised Deputy Mike Downing that a deer ran into the roadway and she was unable to avoid hitting the animal with the front of her 2010 Kia Flex.

Damage was estimated at $2,501-$5,000.

At 8 p.m., Larry Pierson, 69, Clayton, was eastbound on County Road 100 South approaching 500 West.

Pierson told Lt. Virgil Lanning that as he was going down a steep hill his 1998 Jeep Wrangler slid on the snow-covered roadway and he lost control. Pierson ended up in the ditch on the driver's side facing westbound.

Damage was estimated at $1,001-$2,500.

* At 6:57 p.m. on Saturday, Stephen Williams, 70, Rockville, was northbound on U.S. 231 approaching County Road 100 North.

Williams advised Lt. Lanning and Greencastle Police Officer Eric Vaughan that a deer entered the roadway and he was unable to avoid hitting it with his 2011 Toyota RG4.

Damage was estimated at $1,001-$2,500.

* At 3:38 a.m. on Sunday, Mekenzie E. Fullen, 20, Gosport, was traveling on U.S. 231 near County Road 800 South.

Downing noted he observed a 2008 Pontiac G5 on its driver's side door in the ditch on the west side of U.S. 231.

In the driver's seat, Fullen was unresponsive and appearing to have a seizure. Medics were able to break out the passenger side window to gain entry to the vehicle, where they were able to turn on the car's ignition and roll down the driver's side window.

Downing noted that personnel were able to pass Fullen out of the window and get her to the ambulance where she was then transported to a landing zone in the South Putnam High School parking lot before being flown via Statflight for immediate medical attention.

A witness, Logan Ross Watkins, advised Downing that Fullen left the west side of the roadway just north of County Road 800 South when she nosed dived into the ditch on the south side of the road, landing on the driver's side.

Assisting at the scene were Operation Life, the Cloverdale Volunteer Fire Department and the Greencastle Police Department.

At 8:48 p.m., Anita D. Herbert, 52, Bainbridge, was westbound on U.S. 36 when she crossed Clear Creek Bridge and lost control of her 2006 Buick Lucerne due to snow and ice on the bridge.

Herbert advised Downing that she crossed into the eastbound lane, striking the face of the guardrail on the south side of the bridge before continuing another 100 feet and coming to rest in the ditch on the south side of U.S. 36.

Herbert noted that she did hit her head during the accident, but refused medical attention, stating that she would seek it on her own if needed.

Damage was estimated at $2,501-$5,000.

At 10:12 p.m., Clinton W. Gibson III, 47, Greencastle, was heading to a friend's house in the Heritage Lake area.

While on his way, Gibson advised Downing he lost control of his 2000 Ford ZX3 due to snow and ice on the roadway, causing him to run off Heritage Drive, go through a ditch and back onto the roadway.

Gibson thought everything was fine until he began to smell smoke. He then parked his vehicle near 636 Jefferson Valley, grabbed what he could and then exited the vehicle. The homeowner at the residence called 9-1-1 and reported the vehicle fully engulfed in flames.

The Floyd Township Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched to the scene to extinguish the flames.

Damage was estimated at $5,001-$10,000.

At 11:06 p.m., Sydnie Covert, 19, Greencastle, was eastbound on U.S. 40, approaching County Road 625 West.

Covert advised Lanning that another vehicle passed her on the left and she had applied the brakes too hard on her 2005 Kia Amanti and due to the snow-covered roadway, she lost control.

Damage was estimated at $1,001-$2,500.

* At 12:49 a.m. on Monday, Nathan Hutchens, 23, Indianapolis, was eastbound on U.S. 40 just east of Manhattan Road.

Hutchens told Lanning his 2013 Dodge Dart began to slide on the snow-covered roadway and he lost control, striking the front end of his vehicle against a bridge rail.

The collision caused full airbag deployment. However, the bridge showed no signs of damage.

Damage was estimated at $1,001-$2,500.

* At 11:06 a.m. on Tuesday, Brian E. Judy, 47, Greencastle, was southbound on County Road 275 East near County Road 500 North when he lost control of his 2011 Nissan Armada on the ice-covered roadway.

Judy advised Lt. Dwight Simmons that he slid off the west side of the road and made front passenger side impact with a tree, causing damage to the right front fender and grille area.

Judy added that the engine compartment began smoldering and fire erupted near the vehicle's battery. The entire vehicle was fully involved prior to fire units arriving on scene.

With the vehicle a total loss, damage was estimated at $10,001-$25,000.

At 2:05 p.m., Gary Elmore, 59, Coatesville, was northbound on County Road 500 East when he encountered some ice on the roadway.

Elmore advised Simmons he then lost control of his 2004 Ford F350, which slid off the west side of the roadway, striking a fence.

Damage was listed at $2,501-$5,000.

At 5:08 p.m., Cloyd A. Fowler, 61, Avon, was northbound on County Road 325 West when his 2001 Ford Ranger lost traction.

Fowler advised Deputy Kyle Gibbons that he left the road, spun through a ditch and made impact with a Parke County REMC pole, snapping it in half.

Impact caused significant damage to the side of the vehicle from the front to the back.

Damage was estimated at $5,001-$10,000.

* At 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Kenneth L. Brown, 59, Bainbridge, was southbound on County Road 725 East just north of County Road 800 North when he lost control of his 1998 Ford Explorer.

Brown advised Cpl. Josh Boller that he attempted to gain control of his vehicle when driving over what looked to be ice and snow. However, he was unable to keep his vehicle on the roadway and struck a ditch causing it to overturn.

Damage was estimated at $2,501-$5,000.

* At 6:30 a.m. on Thursday, Peggy A. Davis, 50, Spencer, was northbound on U.S. 231.

Davis advised Chief Deputy Tom Helmer, that a deer ran into her path of travel. Although, she applied the brakes on her 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt, she was unable to avoid a collision.

Damage was estimated at $1,001-$2,500.

City Fire

The Greencastle Fire Department has responded to multiple dispatches recently.

* At 2:18 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 19, GFD was dispatched to the intersection of West County Road 125 South and South County Road 175 West for a telephone pole that had fallen across the roadway. GFD secured the scene until the phone company arrived.

* At 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 19, GFD performed an odor investigation at 1600 W. CR 225 South after receiving a call that something smelled hot. Upon investigation the odor was found to be caused from batteries that had overheated while charging.

* At 3:20 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 19, GFD was called to 130 Martinsville St. to investigate smoke inside a residence. A frozen water pipe broke and shorted out a furnace but no fire was present.

* At 5:33 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 19, GFD was dispatched to Heartland Automotive, 300 S. 10th St., for a fire alarm that been triggered by a pull station as a safety precaution. No fire was present.
