DePauw women go 2-0 in opening weekend

MILWAUKEE, Wis. - DePauw capped off a perfect opening weekend with a 63-54 win over Wisconsin-Whitewater in the Paul F. Knueppel Classic hosted by Wisconsin Lutheran College Saturday.

The Tigers, ranked seventh in the coaches' poll and ninth by D3hoops.com improved to 2-0, while the Warhawks, ranked 11th by the coaches and 14th by D3hoops.com, dropped to 1-3.

Whitewater scored the game's first five points and never trailed in the opening half, while leading by as many as eight. The Warhawks took a 27-22 lead into the intermission and still held a 36-32 advantage four minutes into the second half before DePauw scored the next eight.

Taylor Howard started the run with two free throws before Hannah Douglas hit a free throw, Savannah Trees converted a three-point play and Howard followed with a bucket.

Malia Smith stopped the streak after hitting the second of two free throws, but the Tigers scored the next six with Douglas scoring on a layup before Trees hit two charity tosses and Abby Keller scored inside to make it 46-37 with 9:52 remaining.

The Tigers stretched the lead to as many as 12 at 50-38 after Emma Ondik hit a pair of free throws with 7:55 left. Whitewater got as close as five, but DePauw held on down the stretch.

Trees paced DePauw with 15 and Douglas added 14, while Keller snagged nine rebounds and Ondik dished out four assists. Ondik was DePauw's representative on the all-tournament team.

Andrea Meinert paced the Warhawks with 15 points, while Kate McKay followed with 11. Lisa Palmer grabbed a team-high eight rebounds.

DePauw shot 47.6 percent from the field including 56.5 percent in the second half, while Whitewater shot 40.8 percent from the floor. The Warhawks held a slim 29-28 rebounding edge.

The Tigers open the home portion of their schedule on Tuesday, November 25, when they host Franklin College in a 6 p.m. contest.

The game marks the return of Dana (Ferguson) Haggenjos '03 who lettered four years for the Tigers and served as an assistant coach for 10 seasons before taking over as Franklin's head coach in June.
