Tiger Sharks swim to victory over Eagles
South Putnam's swim team held its second meet of the year when county rival Greencastle visited for its first meet.
The Tiger Sharks were anxious to get into the water and took first place honors.
The Lady Tiger Sharks scored 122 through the events while the Lady Eagles scored 48.
The boys were a little more competitive, with Greencastle winning 110-70.
"I thought we looked very sharp tonight, both boys and girls," Greencastle coach Kent Menzel said. "We've been working hard the last few weeks. The chance to swim in a meet is a break from the regular training for everyone. It looks like they were enjoying themselves and swimming well."
Greencastle took six of the first seven events, including a Corrine Romer victory in the 200-yard-IM by five seconds and a win by Cecila Pohlar in the 200-yard-freestyle that just beat out South Putnam's Katie Jo Beasley by less than a second.
"We got particularly good swims tonight from Mallary Meyer and Amelia Smith. Both of them were very shared from the start to finish of the meet. Among our boys, I thought our freshman Connor Stimpert was very sharp tonight as well in his first meet as a Tiger Shark."
South Putnam's Ben Albright swam his way to a 200-yard-freestyle victory and Zane Crosby managed two individual wins in the 50-yard-freestyle and the 100-yard-freestyle.
"Both (Monday) and tonight were both great meets for our kids" Eagle coach Anna Kendall said. "They are starting this season where they finished last year at sectionals, which is a great place to start. That's for the kids who swam previously."
Teaming up with the Eagles, who saw the record breaking South Putnam season last year, are some new faces that Kendall said she really enjoys coaching.
"We have a lot of kids who have not been on the swim team before or who are freshmen. For those kids we saw them put into practice a lot of the technical aspects that we've been talking about during practice. We're looking forward to continuing to improve those things. They really stepped in with confidence in this meet. I think it really showed in their times."
Kendall said there are unforeseen advantages to having players from all walks of life in the pool together.
"That's actually one of the things that I love about this team. There is that variety and when get to see kids who are three-sport athletes. We had a large number from the cross country team. It's been fun to have that variety in the pool. I think they learn from each other. Swimmers are learning from cross-country runners and vice-versa and that's neat to see."
Zach Rayce took two first place events for the Eagles and was also on the 200-yard-really team with Blaine Pitts, Albright and Crosby that won first place just by a second.
The Tiger Sharks were victorious in five of the six relays for the night.
"Our relays looked good," Menzel said. "They swam very well together. We were consistently strong from beginning to end, which was one of our goals tonight. We were able to accomplish that. I'm very proud of our team and happy with the way they perform.
I thought the South Putnam team looked very sharp. Coach Kendall is doing a great job. I thought that Zane Crosby, Zach Rayce and Katie Jo Beasley looked very sharp. South Putnam's a great competitor and coach Kendall is doing a great job with that team."
