DePauw University has been named to the 2014 President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll by the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS).

DePauw's community service efforts have earned the university a "with distinction" designation, described as being "given to those applicants that display strong levels of institutional commitment, provide a compelling case for partnerships that produce measurable impact in the community, and have a Federal Work-Study community service percentage of 15 percent or above."

DePauw is among 120 institutions of higher education to be so honored, it was announced Friday.

"Service and higher education go hand in hand," Wendy Spencer, CEO of the Corporation for National and Community Service, said.

"These schools are inspiring young leaders to roll up their sleeves and work alongside community members to solve problems," she added. "By recognizing the institutions who are leading the way to achieve meaningful, measurable results for the communities they serve, we also highlight the vital role all colleges and universities play in addressing community challenges and placing more students on a lifelong path of civic engagement."

CNCS, the federal agency for volunteering and service, has administered the award since 2006 in collaboration with the U.S. Department of Education and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, as well as the American Council on Education, Campus Compact, and the Interfaith Youth Core.

During the 2013-14 academic year, DePauw completed 31,469 hours of community service through its structured programs, to the benefit of more than 60 nonprofits and community agencies.

The estimated economic impact for those efforts has been calculated at $696,723.66, DePauw officials said.
