The Cloverdale girls were the first to take the basketball court against Greencastle in the doubleheader Friday, however after a superb first quarter by Greencastle the game was put on ice, as the Tiger Cubs won 60-20.

The first quarter was all about Greencastle and mostly about senior Callan Taylor and junior Allison White. White scored 10 first-quarter points, while Taylor notched eight.

"I thought we came out with a lot of energy which is what you want," GHS coach Bradley Key said. "I thought Callan Taylor and Delanie Stoltey played a really good first half."

On the Cloverdale side points were hard to come by, as the shots that the Clovers took just couldn't find the bottom of the net. After going scoreless in the first, senior Bailey Stevens began to rally her team to take more shots. They were able to score seven in the second quarter.

"I thought we just came out slow again in the first quarter," Clover coach Matt Langdon said. "We looked a little bit timid and against a very good Greencastle team, they're just going to take advantage of that."

After the 22-point first quarter by the Tiger Cubs, Cloverdale was able to put a slight halt to the Greencastle scoring, holding Taylor to just one bucket in each of the final three quarters.

"After the first quarter, to be honest I was pretty pleased," Langdon said. "Our defense picked up. We left them the lane less. At times we struggled on offense, but we did what needed to do to improve."

However, Greencastle players like Stoltey worked inside and outside to score seven in the second quarter via two buckets and a three.

"It's just our teamwork," Stoltey said. "We're an unselfish team. We don't care who scores. It's just whoever can get it into the bucket so we just moving it. Playing good defense leads into our offense. As long as we get a stop on D we are motivated to get a score on offense."

That defensive mentality was coupled with an emphasis on grabbing rebounds. Senior Jessica Lenihan, who didn't have much playing time as she is recovering from a bout of flu, still managed 5 rebounds on the night. White was impossible to keep off the glass, gobbling up 11 rebounds and helping Greencastle with its 35-11 advantage on the glass.

Cloverdale's strategy of trying to get points in the paint finally began to pay off in the third quarter as The Clovers scored 11 point to keep up with GHS' 12. But the fourth quarter told the story of the night with Greencastle holding the visitors to two points.

"In the third quarter we started to get the ball into the lane against their zone," Langdon said. "Which is something we been looking for, for a long time. We can shoot the three but we have to be able to get it inside. We're looking forward to what we can improve on for the next game."

Cloverdale falls to 5-4 (0-1 WCC) and its next game will be at Cloverdale against Linton-Stockton. Greencastle moves to 8-3 (1-0 WCC) and will next travel to Rockville.
