County Jail

Several people were booked into the Putnam County Jail recently.

* At 4:38 p.m. on Friday, Susan Marie Burrows, 32, Brazil, was charged with battery.

* At 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, Timothy Day, 22, Greenwood, was arrested for leaving the scene of a accident with serious bodily injury.

At 12:14 p.m., Luther Thomas Hill Jr., 49, Avon, was charged with failure to appear.

At 10:41 p.m., Brady Lee Simmons, 31, Roachdale, was charged with possession of paraphernalia and possession of marijuana.

* At 5:38 p.m. on Monday, Clarence Blaine Brant, 47, Clinton, was arrested for operating while intoxicated with a prior and driving on a suspended license.

* At 1:08 a.m. on Tuesday, Frank Everett Stanley, 33, Spencer, was charged with operating while intoxicated and leaving the scene of an accident.

At 2:18 a.m., Nicholas Lee Canfield, 34, Birch River, W. Va., was arrested for operating while intoxicated.

City Police

One recent arrest was reported by Greencastle City Police officers.

-- At 4:29 p.m. Saturday, Robert Baker, Jr., 52, Reelsville, was arrested at Putnam County Hospital on a charge of operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated with a prior offense after being taken there by Officer Matt Huffman for a blood draw.

Under portable blood-alcohol content testing Baker, who was lodged in the Putnam County Jail, had registered a .10 percent level, police said.

Meanwhile, Emily Cherry, 21, Indianapolis, was issued a summons into court on a possession of paraphernalia charge after being stopped at 10:51 p.m. Saturday on Greencastle's East Side.

She was reportedly stopped by Officer Eric Vaughan in the parking lot at the Greencastle Taco Bell on Indianapolis Road.

One citation was issued recently by city officers.

-- At 5:26 p.m. Saturday, Terry King II, 28, Coatesville, was stopped by Officer Kyle Lee at Shadowlawn Avenue and Indiana Street.

King was cited for driving with a suspended license with a prior offense.

Sheriff's Dept.

* At 4:41 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 5, Larry L. Howard, 43, Rockville, was westbound on U.S. 36 near County Road 875 West.

Howard advised Deputy Mike Downing that a deer ran into his path and he was unable to avoid hitting the animal with his 2006 Ford F150.

Howard's vehicle suffered damage to the rear driver's side quarter panel and tail light area.

Damage was estimated at $1,001-$2,500.

* At 7:15 a.m. on Friday, Destiny L. Frazier, 18, Greencastle, had been parked facing the east in a private drive at 4451 S. CR 325 West.

Frazier advised Chief Deputy Tom Helmer that she backed up her vehicle's right rear bumper struck Jerry J. Miller Jr.'s, 1999 Dodge Dakota's left-rear, which was parked in the same driveway. Frazier advised that she thought she had cleared Miller's vehicle, but due to the ice-covered rear, side windows and mirrors, she misjudged her distance.

Damage was estimated at $1,001-$2,500.

* At 5:33 a.m. on Saturday, Stacie N. Anderson, 29, Greencastle, was northbound on U.S. 231 near the Putnam County Hospital when a deer ran into her path.

Anderson said she was unable to avoid hitting the deer with her 2008 Honda Accord, which sustained damage to the driver's side head light area as well as the driver's side front fender.

Damage was estimated at $2,501-$5,000.

At 10:16 p.m., Jay D. Bartrum, 50, Greencastle, was southbound when a deer ran into the roadway.

Bartrum stated that he was unable to avoid the animal and struck it in the center of the grille area of his 2010 Dodge Ram 1500, which sustained heavy front-end damage.

Damage was estimated $5,001-$10,000.

At 11:02 p.m., Nick K. Eblen, 60, Terre Haute, was westbound on U.S. 40 around County Road 300 East when several deer ran into the roadway.

Eblen advised Deputy Matt Biggs he was unable to avoid striking the last deer with his 2005 Chevrolet Equinox. After hitting the animal, Eblen continued to U.S. 40 and U.S. 231 to pull over at a safe location.

Upon Biggs' arrival, he observed heavy front end damage, which disabled the vehicle.

Damage was estimated at $5,001-$10,000.

* At 2:20 p.m. on Sunday, Tyler M. Ganter, 17, Cloverdale, was reportedly traveling south on Stardust Way between 40-50 mph in a posted 30-mph zone.

Ganter advised Deputy Matt Biggs that several adults were walking in the roadway, which resulted in him swerving his 2003 Chevrolet Caviler to avoid missing them.

Ganter then lost control of his vehicle and spun 180 degrees.

Biggs noted that while the vehicle was moving backward, it hit three mailboxes and a utility pole that belonged to residents Brent Polster, Randy Nagel, David Myers and Duke Energy.

Damage was estimated at $5,001-$10,000.

At 4:22 p.m., Jose Vidal Meija Moreno, 27, O'Fallon, Mo., was eastbound on Interstate 70 near the 48-mile marker when a vehicle passed him on the right and cut over in front of him.

Moreno advised Downing that he swerved his 2000 Volkswagen Jetta to the left to avoid the oncoming vehicle and left the north side. Moreno then swerved back to the right and lost control of his vehicle, which resulted in him crossing both lanes of traffic and leaving the south side of the road, traveling through a ditch and rolling over onto the driver's side.

Cloverdale Volunteer Fire Department and Operation Life assisted at the scene.

Damage was estimated at $5,001-$10,000.

City Fire

The Greencastle Fire Department performed five medical assists and responded to numerous dispatches recently.

* At 10:23 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 11, GFD responded to a structure fire at 2997 S. CR 150 West. The residence is actually that of a firefighter and the fire was believed to have started accidentally when ashes from a fireplace or possibly a wood stove were dumped too close to the home, starting a fire inside a wall. GFD opened the wall and extinguished the fire.

* At 8:55 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 11, GFD was called to a motor vehicle accident at 518 S. CR 125 West when a car was found in the ditch. GFD stayed on scene until police arrived, no injuries were reported.

* At 10:42 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 11, GFD was dispatched to a fire alarm due to burnt food at 208 E. Olive St.

* At 2:50 p.m. Friday, Dec. 12, GFD came across downed cable lines at 401 N. College Ave. GFD removed the lines from the roadway.

* At 3:07 p.m, 3:24 p.m., 3:38 p.m. and 9:16 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 14, GFD responded to fire alarms at 410 S. Indiana St. Upon each visit, it appeared that the same smoke detector head was malfunctioning or possibly in need of cleaning. After cleaning and returning to the location several times, maintenance looked at the alarm but, GFD was called back yet again. No direct cause was determined.

* At 10:05 a.m. Monday, Dec. 15, GFD was called to 418 Anderson St. for a fire alarm due to cooking.
