Lady Eagles fall to quality team

Friday, December 19, 2014

The South Putnam girls' basketball team hosted its sectional opponent Covenant Christian on Thursday.

Though the odds were leaning toward a big margin, the Eagles actually stood and fought before losing 45-29.

"The score does not reflect the effort of our girls," first-year Eagle coach Tim Garver said. "We knew it was going to be a tough game because of how they are rated and things like that. But to be really honest we played a really good game. We fought hard and we had a rough first half. But to stay so close you have to give all the credit to our girls."

Besides the Eagles' great effort on the night, Thursday was also used to celebrate the Indy Hoops and honor the accomplishments of the Eagle little league teams. About 46 kids were involved from fourth through the eighth grades.

South Putnam has been trying to build its basketball program into a winning organization and is pleased with the achievements of its young Eagles, two of their three little league teams finishing in second place in the Indy Hoops tourney.

As for the Lady Eagles, they will be on a break until their holiday tournament on Jan. 3 where they will take on Eminence at home.

"I'm extremely proud," Garver said. "From the start of the season to where we are now, I'm extremely proud. I think we are ahead of where we want to be and we have to continue on with that."
