Cougars battle back but fall at home
ROACHDALE--The North Putnam boys' basketball team fell to the Cadets at home Friday night, 45-31.
North Putnam (1-6 0-1 WCC) had problems scoring the ball in the first half only scoring 11 points and went down by 12 at halftime. Senior Michael Roberts had all five first-quarter points and junior Austin Judy had four of the six points in the second.
"It was a battle," Cougar coach Collin McCartt said. "Turnovers killed us in the first half. We had some soft passes and we just didn't take care of the ball. We're just trying to put together a full 32-minute game."
North Putnam came back in the third quarter and went on a 12-4 run. It cut the lead to as low as three at 26-23 with just over three minutes left in the quarter. They could not take advantage anymore before they went down 27-23 going into the fourth.
"I just think they all started playing hard," McCartt said. "To play with emotion is a good thing. I think we started doing that. It got contagious and we started making some plays. We got on a nice little run there."
Roberts would hit a free throw to kick off the fourth and Cascade's (2-4 2-0 WCC) Zac Butler followed it up with a basket. The teams swapped baskets on each of their three opening possessions.
Finally, a three by Cascade's Evan Burch put the lead up to seven and from there on it was all Cascade en route to a 45-31 victory.
"Any time you get on the floor and hit some baskets that opens up things," McCartt said. "That helped. Cascade made a three down the stretch that put them up seven. Then we just didn't make some shots."
The Cougars travel to Riverton Parke Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. That is the final game until Jan. 6 when they travel to North Montgomery.
