GHS wrestlers host Holiday Tournament

The Greencastle Tiger Cubs hosted Monrovia, South Vermillion and Sullivan at the 2014 Greencastle Holiday Classic Wrestling Invitational Saturday morning on the floor of the McAnally Center.

Four teams arrived early on Saturday morning but only one went home in the afternoon victorious.

That squad was the Monrovia Bulldogs who were a perfect 3-0 on the day to sweep the team competition.

Coming into the day, Monrovia had high hopes for its full squad.

"Expectations were pretty high. We had a full team and we knew that some of the other schools would have some forfeits," Monrovia head coach Kevin Blundell said.

Host Greencastle came into the day with some holes but still had high expectations.

"We wanted to wrestle hard. We knew we were giving up a lot of forfeits and goal was to get as many champions as we could and to wrestle hard," Greencastle coach Charlie Pingleton said. "We stay aggressive and we keep on it."

In the first round South Vermillion defeated Greencastle 42-34 and Monrovia defeated Sullivan 58-18.

Greencastle fell to 0-2 on the day with a 48-22 loss to Monrovia, who improved to 2-0.

South Vermillion and Sullivan evened their records at one win and one loss after Sullivan outdueled South Vermillion 48-27.

Monrovia clinched the title in the third round with an easy victory over South Vermillion 72-12 to move to 3-0 and push South Vermillion to third place at 1-2.

Sullivan clinched the runner-up award with a 48-20 victory over Greencastle who fell to 0-3 and a last place finish.

Winning their weight classes for the champion Monrovia were Bryson Dennesy (106), Chuck Capps (120), Rowan Gast-Bray (132), Trevor Ellis (145), Ethan Stock (160), Cam Smith (170), Garrison Lee (195), Dristan McCubbins (220) and Riley McCubbins (HWT).

With two weight class winners in the 113 class and in the 126 class for Greencastle were Ryley Cook and Trae Carrington.

Sullivan and South Vermillion only had one class winner each.

For Sullivan it was Wes Bedwell (138) who also won the medal for most total falls and the South Vermillion winner was Tanner Smith (182).

Monrovia looks ahead to next week when it will participate in the Mooresville Holiday Classic.

"I told this would be a night and day difference (from this week) not taking anything away from the schools here. We have Yorktown, Cathedral, I mean monster schools with great programs," Blundell said. "We want to get as many people placed as possible next we and have them wrestle."

"We still have a long year and I think by the end of it we will be where we need to be ," Pingleton said.
