The Greencastle girls' basketball team's great start wasn't enough to pull away for good Saturday, but with toughness and grit the Lady Tiger Cubs managed a 60-55 win against a Northview team that kicked it into high gear once the final quarter started.

The Game started tit-for-tat with both teams going back and forth as the game started.

Northview's sophomore Stacey Payton made a three early in the first and senior Mikayla Rowan made a bucket and a free throw to help the Lady Knights.

Greencastle knocked down three threes in the first, taking advantage of open floor space.

Seniors Callan Taylor, Delanie Stoltey and Lauren Bridgewater were the sharp shooters, giving the home team nine points to Northview's 10 after one quarter.

"We practice threes a bunch," GHS coach Bradley Key said. "If you are open you've got to hit it. They have four six-footers. We don't have four six-footers."

Greencastle may have been outsized but its outside shooting gave the Tiger Cubs room to operate once the floor was spread.

Taylor hit another three along with senior Jessica Lenihan, who scored seven in the second. Junior Paige Bragg knocked in a three and the buckets led to a 62-21 halftime lead for the Tiger Cubs.

"It was a great team win," Taylor said. "Delanie and (junior) Bethany (Burgeson) hit some big threes which got us going. We were also able to attack the basket which helps us. When we get free throws and knock them down it helps us a lot."

The size advantage of Northview began to play a difference, though not on the glass. Both teams grabbed 27 rebounds apiece but Northview's 6-1 Rowan made it to the line three times in the third and went four-of-five in the quarter. She took 11 fouls shots in all, hitting five.

Greencastle did not give up its lead in the third quarter as the team kept its threes flowing. Bridgewater hit another one from deep, adding to her two foul shots and Burgeson's shooting allowed for the inside game to open up. Taylor, who made plays at both ends of the court including taking a tough charge in the third, slashed through the lane for four points while sophomore Mia Stevens, getting her first varsity start, also netted a bucket.

"It was great," Bridgewater said. "The intensity was right where it needed to be. The offense was really fast paced which is what we've been missing. Mia Stevens really brought it tonight and was able to make it move a little quicker."

In the fourth, Northview's Payton exploded, making four threes. Northview senior Mallory Smith added another three and two more points to help Northview to its best quarter of the game.

GHS held a 51-40 lead with three minutes to go but after some big threes the Tiger Cubs lead had dwindled to 53-50 with 1:30 to go. However, when junior Allison White sunk a bucket to make it a six-point lead with less than a minute to go, Northview had to resort to a fouling game and GHS held on for the win.

Greencastle's team play was the ultimate advantage with 11 assists compared to Northview's four.

Greencastle (10-4) is in action again Thursday at Terre Haute North while Northview (9-4) will be at Owen Valley on Friday.
