Cloverdale boys gain lead late, notch win

Saturday, January 10, 2015

CLOVERDALE -- The Clover basketball team welcomed the Covenant Christian Warriors to their floor Friday in hopes of beating them for only the second time in school history. The Clovers squeaked one out 65-61.

"It was a team win. I thought when we came out in the second half and played good team basketball which led to the win," Cloverdale head coach Pat Rady said.

The Clovers had trouble stopping Warriors stand out freshman Jordan Webb who had 22 points in the game but by the end of the game the triple threat of senior KJ Coleman, senior Marquise Moore and sophomore Cooper Neese prevailed with a combined 54 points with Coleman leading the way with 23.

Senior Brantson Scott pitched in four points, sophomore Duke Duff hit a 3-pointer and senior Tyler Lotz along with freshman Jalen Moore hit a layup.

Cloverdale played from behind for most of the game, trailing at the end of each quarter, beside the one that matters the most. The Clovers trailed by seven going into the fourth but the character and intensity of the team shined through.

Cloverdale went on an 8-0 run to take the lead but from that point on the teams traded buckets with the Clovers taking the lead with a minute to go and knocking down their free-throws for the win.

"The second half was a true test of character and I think we are growing together. I think in the second half we really grew as a team," Rady said.

The Clovers played good defense throughout the game, holding the Warriors to just 61 points. This same team has scored 106 points and above in two of their games this season already and are a known hot-shooting team. The Warriors proved that as they shot almost 50 percent from the field.

The Clovers kept on their good rebounding, holding the Warriors to just four offensive rebounds.

The Cloverdale defense gave up nine assists but that was due to the Warriors finding the holes in the defense that was strong all night.

Even though the Clovers trailed most of the game the crowd was loud the whole time and Rady acknowledged it as a huge benefit to the team.

"The crowd and the band get behind us and do not let us get down. We definitely have a sixth man and we really appreciate it," Rady said. "A lot of times in a gym it is quiet when the other team makes a run but not with our crowd."
