CRAWFORDSVILLE--Greencastle's wrestling team spent its final tune-up before the West Central Conference meet at Crawfordsville High School, taking part in the seven-team Athenian Invitational Saturday.

The Tiger Cubs placed second overall behind West Lafayette, had two individual champions and had all 11 wrestlers place in the top six on the day.

Greencastle head coach Charles Pingleton said the day was a successful one for the team as a whole.

"We wrestled a great tournament as we took second as a team," Pingleton said. "This was the first tournament of the season that we have wrestled that was not a dual meet tournament.

"It was an individual style tournament. We had six wrestlers that made it to the finals."

Ryley Cook and Trae Carrington won their respectively weight classes on the day while Michael Anderson, James Brown, Andrew Ruiz and Braden Lady each finished second.

Cook defeated West Lafayette's Alex Fauber and Seeger's Harley Steele to claim the 113 pound crown while Carrington defeated Fountain Central's Caleb Phillips, McCutcheon's Cole Garriot and West Lafayette's Jack Doty to win the 132 pound weight class.

Keaton Boswell finished in third place at 106 pounds, Joe January finished fourth at 285 pounds Cameron Hinton finished fifth at 138 pounds, Jacob Meyer finished sixth at 152 pounds and Cade Winslow finished sixth at 195 pounds to round out the rest of the Tiger Cubs in action Saturday.

Among the finishers, Pingleton said that January was showing improvement at the right time of the year.

"Joe January at HWT really stood out to the coaches as stepping it up this tournament," Pingleton said. "Joe had a lot of really close matches that could have went either way."

With the WCC meet coming up on Saturday, Pingleton felt the team was in a better position mentally to win the conference title.

"The whole team including the coaching staff is excited for conference," Pingleton said. "We believe we are a better individual scoring team than a dual meet team.

"The team believes we can win conference and the biggest step in winning is just believing."
